Several children came to the Poland library to create gingerbread houses just in time for the holidays on Dec. 20.

Each child got a plate with some graham crackers, instead of gingerbread, and a cardboard milk or orange juice carton as a base for the house. In the middle of the room there was a table full of candy to use as decorations. As everyone walked down the table, they filled a bowl full of candy they wanted to decorate with and a bowl of frosting to glue all of the pieces together.

The children started by using the frosting to glue the graham crackers to the drink cartons. Many of the children picked out Skittles, candy canes, gum drops and other decorations they used the frosting to glue to the graham crackers. There were a few decorations that didn’t make it onto the house, but rather became treats for the children.

Guests had to register online or at the library to secure a spot for the program. There were several people on a waiting list, the library opened up five more spots to be filled. There were people who showed up in hopes that a spot would open up right before the program started.

The gingerbread house program is one that occurs annually at the library. The success of the program allows the library to continue hosting it each year and allowing children to have fun and prepare for the holidays.
