What: Orchids are the jewels of the plant world. Let them dazzle you with their brilliance and splendor. During the heart of winter, find the spirit of the tropics at the Davis Center as you observe these exotic beauties on display.

Meet the Artist

What: Come and meet our featured artist, C. Scott Lanz of Lanzscape Photography.

Sprout Club: Mad Science

When: 1 to 2 p.m. today

What: Join Sprout Club this winter to learn about the amazing world of plants through mad science.

Where: Fellows Riverside Gardens

Cost: $7/class

Details: Age 3 to 5, plus adult. Each class will include an activity and snack.

Wilderness Trackers

When: 2 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday

What: Kids will explore mammals and the tracks they leave behind while participating in activities, games and crafts.

Where: Ford Nature Center, 840 Old Furnace Road, Youngstown

Cost: $3 for Mahoning County residents; $5 for non-residents. Register at Ford Nature Center.

Details: For kids age 6 to 9. They’ll create a mold of an animal track to take home. Dress warm for a short hike, weather permitting.

NATIONAL TREASURES: THE NATIONAL PARKS

When: 2 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday

What: Learn about the history and mission of the National Park Service as it strives to “preserve unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education and inspiration of this and future generations.” Hear more in-depth information about select parks that have been visited by two Nature Center staffers through a photo slide show.

Ikebana Vase

When: 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday

What: Ikebana is the Japanese art of flower arrangement. Create a nature-inspired Ikebana vase with Lynn Cardwell.

Where: Fellows Riverside Gardens

Details: The vase will be glazed, fired and ready to take home four to five weeks after the class.
