Jury selection to begin in case of 2013 murder, rape

YOUNGSTOWN — Jury selection is expected to get underway shortly in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court for a man accused of a 2013 murder.

Judge John Durkin is hearing the case against David Hackett, 54, who faces charges of aggravated murder and rape for the death of Collena Carpenter, 30, of Homeworth in Columbiana County, who was found Oct. 13, 2013, stabbed several times by the Mahoning River near West Avenue.

Hackett was facing death penalty specifications but those were dismissed by prosecutors last January.

Hackett also served prison time for the 1979 shotgun slaying of a man on the North Side.
