Clippers finish 23rd at Bill Dies Memorial

The Columbiana High School wrestling team finished 23rd out of 48 teams in the Bill Dies Tournament. Clippers coach Chris Canale called the tournament the toughest in his program’s seven-year history. Among the competitors were five teams ranked in the Division I Top 12, the number two team in Div. II and three of the Top 11 teams in Div. III. Columbiana was led by Tim Davin and Caleb Rupert as tournament placers. Davin placed third with a record of 5-1, his only loss came in the semifinals to Elyria’s Kevin Vough, the ninth-ranked wrestler in the nation. Rupert finished fourth going 4-2. His losses were to Div. I wrestlers. Also competing for the Clippers were Brandt Virden, Vince Vivo and Nathan Whitehead, who finished one win from placing.
