“Homeland” (9 p.m., Showtime): The popular spy thriller takes on a timely feel as it returns for its turbo-charged sixth season. A new president has just been elected and former CIA agent Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) is now working for a Brooklyn-based foundation that provides aid to Muslims living in the U.S. The season, we’re told, will deal with a transitional time where a “very fragile and complex transfer of power” takes place between the outgoing president and the incoming leader.

“Victoria” (9 p.m., PBS; see story below): This lavish new “Masterpiece” series recalls the early reign of Britain’s Queen Victoria (Jenna Coleman), who assumed the crown at the tender age of 18. Part 1 follows her struggles to take charge amid plots to manipulate her.

“The Young Pope” (9 p.m., HBO): Jude Law plays the title character in “The Young Pope.” It’s a 10-episode miniseries about a fictional pontiff from Brooklyn who stubbornly resists many Vatican traditions while struggling through a crisis of faith. Diane Keaton also stars.
