Taco Bell to start using chicken shell

IRVINE, Calif.

Taco Bell plans to go nationwide this month with its latest concoction: a taco with a shell made entirely out of fried chicken.

Taco Bell says the shell of the Naked Chicken Chalupa is made up of all-white seasoned chicken. The rest of the taco is packed with lettuce, tomatoes, cheddar cheese and avocado ranch sauce.

The fast-food chain says the taco tested well in markets in Bakersfield, Calif., and Kansas City, Mo., over the past two years. It will be available at Taco Bells across the country Jan. 26.

Plagued by bird flu, South Korea agrees to buy eggs from US

DES MOINES, Iowa

South Korea is in the throes of a bird-flu outbreak and has asked the United States to ship it shell eggs, marking the first time the Asian country has sought to buy large quantities of fresh U.S. eggs.

The demand is good for a U.S. egg industry that’s awash in the product, having replenished its flocks after the 2015 bird-flu outbreak and ending up with an oversupply that sent domestic prices to industry lows – about 79 cents a dozen this month.

South Korea is seeking help now that it has lost about 26 million chickens – and a third of its egg-laying hens – to the H5N6 strain since November. It’s South Korea’s worst bird-flu outbreak, surpassing the 14 million birds killed in 2014.

New protest strategy

BISMARCK, N.D.

The front lines of the battle against the $3.8 billion Dakota Access pipeline are shifting away from the dwindling encampment in North Dakota, with main opposing groups asking for activism to be spread around the U.S., a call heeded when a banner was unfurled during an NFL game on New Year’s Day.

The message also has evolved from a struggle against a single four-state pipeline to an effort to advance the rights of Native Americans, the leader of the Standing Rock Sioux tribe says.
