Woman tells police she tried to take food because benefits had run out

AUSTINTOWN — Township police arrested a woman on Thursday for allegedly stealing groceries from Walmart because her food stamps had run out, according to a report.

Janet May, 26, of Austintown, was arrested after a loss prevention employee told police she had neglected to scan $65 worth of groceries in the self-checkout lane at the Walmart, 6001 Mahoning Ave.

May was with a friend, who was not involved in the theft, and a child. She told police she needed the food and she was out of food stamps.

She was charged with misdemeanor one theft.
