Poland Union Elementary hosted its third annual pancake breakfast on Dec. 10.

Students from Union brought their family members to enjoy a nice breakfast. Guests had their choice of pancakes and sausage along with milk, coffee and other refreshments. Several culinary students from Mahoning County Career and Technical Center made and helped serve the pancakes to the guests. The students had a good time doing something different and helping out the elementary school.

“It’s nice just to come out and see the little kids and how they’re excited for Santa,” said MCCTC student Nick Milano.

Youngstown State University advertising club advisor Michael Pontikos brought students from ads club to help the elementary students write letters to Santa. The Union students had the option to write a letter during the breakfast or bring one in they wrote at home. All of the students who submitted a letter will be given one back written by Santa.

“It’s been fun to see the gets how they think about what they want for Christmas. It’s exciting and you can see the kids are excited,” said YSU student Kellie Daley.

Union students dropped their letter off right before they visited Santa and Mrs. Claus to take a picture and tell the Clauses what they wanted for Christmas. All of the students had an opportunity to get their picture with Santa.

This is the second year that Kohl’s has played a large role in the pancake breakfast. Their Associates in Action program allows employees to volunteer at different non-profit organizations for three hours. The non-profit also receives $500 from Kohl’s to use toward their organization.

“It’s Kohl’s way of giving back to the community,” said customer service area supervisor Belinda Watt.

The pancake breakfast is a good way for the students and families to get into the school outside of school hours to enjoy time together. Family members also get to see the projects on display in the hallways to see what the students are working on.
