Food service directors to attend training

YOUNGSTOWN

The food service directors for two area school districts are among three people in the state who have been selected to attend a weeklong U.S. Department of Agriculture training program.

Selected are Natalie Winkle and Tascin Brooks, food service directors for Boardman and Austintown school districts, respectively.

Produce Safety University, which trains food service staff to “identify and mitigate food safety risks in fresh produce,” according to a news release, will take place this spring. Winkle and Brooks will attend an all-expense paid session in California, Florida, Maryland or Illinois.

The Ohio Department of Education nominated three food service directors from the state for the federal program.

Warren man shot

WARREN

A man, 44, suffered multiple gunshot wounds at his home on Linda Drive Northwest at 12:50 a.m. Tuesday.

Police said the man was found on the back enclosed porch area and had what appeared to be multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to ValleyCare Trumbull Memorial Hospital with what police called a “major injury.” His condition was not available Tuesday.

The man has used the Linda Drive address, as well as an address on Tod Avenue Northwest.

Detectives issued a news release saying they had no suspects.

Funds for street paving

The city, with the help of the engineering firm CT Consultants of Youngstown, will apply for funding from the Ohio Public Works Commission to pave Myron Street. The city hopes to receive a grant to cover 54 percent of the project’s estimated $170,000 cost.

Reservations open at Boardman Park

Boardman Park’s office has started accepting 2018 facility reservations.

The park offers year-round rentals of four indoor rooms and five open-air pavilions. The park also features a variety of outdoor recreational facilities, such as baseball fields, playgrounds, walking/hiking trails and sand volleyball courts.

The park announced it will not increase its reservation fees this year, and it will continue to offer discounted rates to Boardman residents.

The park is accepting 2017 reservations. Reservations for 2018 also recently opened online at boardmanpark.com.

YSU President Tressel to give annual address

YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown State University President Jim Tressel will present his annual “State of the University” address at noon Thursday in the Chestnut Room in Kilcawley Center on campus.

Tressel will recognize accomplishments of the past year and spell out the vision for the year ahead, according to a university news release.

Canfield chili cook-off

CANFIELD

Canfield High School’s inaugural Cardinal Chili Cook-off will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Friday.

Several local restaurants, businesses and clubs will enter their chili in the contest. There are three categories for judging: hot and spicy, thick and hearty, and unconventional. A cash prize of $20 and a trophy will be awarded.

The public is invited to the event which will take place in the high school cafeteria before the Canfield vs Lakeside basketball game. The menu includes all you can eat chili, bread, dessert and beverage. The price is $5 per meal. Children ages 4 and under are free. Admission the basketball game is not included.

Lawmakers sworn in

COLUMBUS

Two local lawmakers Tuesday were sworn in to the Ohio House of Representatives by newly elected Mahoning County Common Pleas Court Judge Anthony D’Apolito.

Michele Lepore Hagan of Youngstown, D-58th, was sworn in, as was John Boccieri of Poland, D-59th, who will begin his first term for his district. Boccieri was appointed to the seat in 2015 to fill a vacancy and won re-election. He previously served in Congress as well as in the Statehouse.

D’Apolito was sworn in last week. Tuesday was his first day on the bench.

Stolen-property charges

BOARDMAN

A Youngstown man faces charges linked to thefts from motor vehicles.

Township police, with warrants from the U.S. Marshals Office, arrested Jesse Spragling, 40, of Youngstown, on two reported thefts from a motor vehicle Dec. 22 and 24 in the Newport Glen area. Police said Spragling was first arrested under two warrants for failure to appear in court in Boardman and Youngstown. He was charged with two counts of receiving stolen property and misuse of a credit card Dec. 29.

A search later revealed the stolen property reported missing from the thefts, police reported.

Board to vote to finalize sale of school

The Austintown school board today will vote on a resolution to finalize the sale of a former school building at 5800 Mahoning Ave. The vote is listed on the agenda of today’s special meeting at 9 a.m. in the central office. The school district has been in sale negotiations with the company that operates the Meijer store chain since last year.

Thefts from vehicles

Township police are investigating a series of thefts from vehicles parked outside residents’ homes.

An estimated $660 worth of property was stolen from homes on Nova Lane, Halbert Drive and Jeanne Lynn Avenue, including ammunition and prescription drugs. An additional $500 of damage was done to one resident’s vehicle.

Residents reported seeing a suspicious vehicle in the neighborhood around 2:30 a.m. on Dec. 30. While investigating an initial theft, police found footprints leading from an address on Nova Lane to a car at another home on the street and outside of two homes on Jeanne Lynn Avenue. In total, five cars were broken into at five different addresses.
