Austintown school board approves sale of old building for grocery-store chain

AUSTINTOWN — The school board this morning unanimously approved the sale of the old school building at 5800 Mahoning Ave. to the company that operates the Meijer grocery-store chain.

The sale price is $2.6 million. Of the net proceeds, 61 percent will go to the school district and 39 percent will go to the heirs of John H. Fitch.

"We're pleased, pleased, pleased," board president pro tempore Dr. David Ritchie said. "It's a long-awaited day for the township and for this school district."

The old school building has sat vacant for roughly a decade since the schools moved to a single campus.

The board resolution authorizes the entities to move forward with transferring the deed.
