Man faces several charges in incident

An Austintown man faces multiple charges after police said he assaulted an officer at a downtown bar early on New Year’s Day.

Nicholas Williams, 22, is charged with assault of a peace officer, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct for the incident that reportedly originated with a fight between Williams and another bar patron Sunday.

A city police officer working security at The Federal intervened, according to a police report. Williams reportedly grabbed the officer’s uniform and vest and attempted to shove him after the officer repeatedly told him to leave the bar.

Williams was taken to the Mahoning County jail.

Child-endangerment charges against man

A city man faces an endangering-children charge after police responded to his Lake Drive home Sunday in reference to a possible drug overdose.

There, police found Fredrick Brown, 31, lying on the floor and “struggling to breath,” according to a report. Police reportedly observed bruises and needle marks on Brown’s arm.

While Brown was being treated, police discovered two young children were in the house. After struggling to get to the children due to the presence of two “large and hostile” dogs, police determined the children were safe.

Brown was taken to an area hospital, where he was served with a summons to appear in Youngstown Municipal Court. He reportedly told police he had been drinking and passed out.

Boil alert issued due to waterline break

A crew from the city’s water department was dispatched to a West Side neighborhood Monday afternoon after a waterline break flooded the area.

According to a report by 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner, water gushed out of the ground along Arden Boulevard, sending water onto lawns and flooding nearby streets.

The road was shut down as heavy equipment was brought in to dig into the pavement.

The water department issued a boil-water advisory for residents in the affected area.

Weapons charge

Police arrested a man on a weapons charge after responding to a call Sunday about a fight involving weapons on Detroit Avenue.

While en route to Detroit, police reportedly initiated a traffic stop on Boston Avenue at Shady Run Road after spotting a vehicle and suspect that matched descriptions from the call.

The stop led police to arrest Victor Aviles, 25, on a charge of using weapons while intoxicated after they reportedly found an unloaded pistol under his seat and observed him to be intoxicated. Aviles was a passenger in the vehicle, and reportedly matched the description of the suspect police had been given for the Detroit Avenue incident.

Police issued him a summons to appear in Youngstown Municipal Court. The gun was seized as evidence.
