Purse increase
AUSTINTOWN
For the second time in six weeks, Hollywood Gaming at Mahoning Valley Race Course has announced an across-the- board purse increase. On Monday, the Austintown racetrack announced a 5 percent increase will take effect Saturday.
This will take the daily purse distribution to an unprecedented level for the facility, which began live thoroughbred racing in November 2014.
The track benefited from the temperate winter which has resulted in no interruption of the live racing calendar, increased exposure from Television Games Network and “an exciting racing product featuring big fields and large payoffs,” said Mark Loewe, vice-president of Ohio Racing for Penn National Gaming, which owns the Austintown racino, in a statement.
Officials have also announced that March 24 has been added to the live racing calendar. The additional race day is a makeup day for a weather-related cancellation in December and will feature the regular first post of 12:45 p.m.
Durable goods
WASHINGTON
U.S. businesses boosted their orders for long-lasting manufactured goods in January by the largest amount in three months, but a key category that tracks business investment plans slipped.
Orders for durable goods rose 1.8 percent in January after two months of declines, the Commerce Department said Monday. The strength stemmed from a big surge in demand for commercial aircraft and military aircraft. Excluding the transportation category, orders actually fell 0.2 percent, the weakest showing since June.
