DISTRICT I BOWLING Boardman boys, Harding girls advance to state tourney
Two teams will represent the Mahoning Valley in the Division I state bowling tournament.
The Boardman boys team and Warren Harding girls team will travel to Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl on March 10.
Boardman took fifth place at AMF Hall of Fame Lanes in Canton with a team score of 3693.
Chase Felger led the Spartans by bowling a 549, good for 23rd place individually. Zach Johnson (520), Sean Sullivan (490), Ben Burkey (351), Nathan Needham (321) and Bobby Morrell (182) contributed to Boardman’s qualification on Sunday.
Scoring higher than any local bowler, but still falling short of Columbus was Austintown Fitch’s Alec Smith. He finished in 22nd place with a score of 549. He was 18 pins short of qualifying as an individual.
In girls play, Warren Harding finished third overall, bowling a collective 3390. Harding’s Katelyn Daughtery tied for ninth place with Massilion Jackson’s Kailey Bonniwell, with both girls scoring 541.
Emily Oswlad (514) Elizabeth Jones (474) and Taylor Arquette (276) round out the Raiders.
Howland (3213) went to districts, but placed eighth. Jessica Guesman led the Tigers by bowling 522 to finish in 13th place. Eighteen more pins would have sent her to state,.
Both individual girls qualifiers fell short. Boardman’s Gloria Hynes bowled 474 to tie for 41st and Fitch’s Brianna Protain took 63rd with a score of 427.
