Penguins drop both games in Winthrop

The Youngstown State softball team dropped two games on day one of the Winthrop Tournament on Saturday afternoon. The Penguins fell to East Tennessee State, 7-3, and Winthrop 7-1.
With the losses, Youngstown State falls to 0-7 on the season.
In the first game, junior Cali Mikovich went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and scored a run. Senior Maria Lacatena and juniors Hannah Lucas and Stevie Taylor each had singles for the Penguins.
In the nightcap, Taylor went 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored to lead the Penguins offense.
The Penguins face Eastern Kentucky and Mount St. Mary’s, Sunday, at 10 a.m. and Noon, respectively.

Big first inning dooms YSU vs. Georgia Tech

No. 17 Georgia Tech had another big first inning and beat the Youngstown State baseball team 14-6 on Saturday on The Flats.
The Yellow Jackets scored five times in the bottom of the first inning, following an eight-run first on Friday.
YSU stayed within striking distance by scoring on an Andrew Kendrick RBI double in the third. Georgia Tech scored in the fourth to increase the margin to 6-1, and it added three runs in the fifth to go up by eight.
Youngstown State got right back in the game with a five-run sixth. Lou Cardona, Nico Padovan and Anthony Rohan had the first three RBIs, and Shane Willoughby provided the final two with a two-run home run to right field. It was the senior shortstop’s second home run this season, and it made the score 9-6.

YSU earns close win over Dayton Flyers

The Youngstown State men’s tennis team won four singles matches to claim a 4-3 win over Dayton on Friday night at the Five Seasons Sports Club.
After losing the doubles point, the Penguins won at No. 1, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 singles to claim the dual match. Four of the six singles matches went three sets, with each team winning two. YSU won the two singles contests decided in straight sets.
At No. 1, Mitch Maroscher won 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 and at No. 3 Thomas Rodrigues won 6-3, 5-7, 7-6. Winning in straight sets were Joao Garreto by scores of 6-3, 7-6 at No. 4 and Danylo Veremeichuk at No. 5 by scores of 6-3, 7-6. It was the YSU debut for Veremichuk.
The win was the eighth for the Penguins who have already exceeded last year’s dual victory total.
women’s tennis
YSU falls on the road to Ball State

Dominika Lackova and Noelly Nsimba picked up singles wins, but the Youngstown State women’s tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to Ball State on Saturday at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center.
Lackova earned a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Carmen Blanco at No. 1 while Nsimba came back after losing the first set 6-1 to win the next two 7-5, 11-9 against Isabelle Dohanics.
The Cardinals (8-2) won the other four singles matches in straight sets.
Ball State won two of the three doubles matches to claim the point. YSU picked up a victory at No. 1 as Ana Stroe and Nsimba defeated Rosalinda Calderon and Rebecca Herrington by a 6-4 score.
