Eagle award
Boy Scout Troop 25, chartered to Canfield United Methodist Church, announced that Matthew James Mosier, son of Cheryl and Jim Mosier, has earned his Eagle Scout award, Scouting’s highest honor.
Before joining Troop 25, Mosier was in Cub Scout Pack 184, chartered to St. Joseph Church. His highest rank attained was Webelos 2, and he also received the Arrow of Light award. His current troop position is assistant scoutmaster. Past positions include senior patrol leader, assistant senior patrol leader, Order of the Arrow troop representative and quartermaster. In total, Mosier has earned 30 merit badges.
His special Scout awards include Order of the Arrow Troop Representative of Excellence and the Seven Ranges Scout Reservation 3rd year Pipestone Award. Mosier also received the Bob Roberts Memorial Back Patch Award with four points. He attended the 2013 National Boy Scout Jamboree at The Summit in West Virginia, participated in Junior Leader Training in 2013, and attended the 100th anniversary of the Order of the Arrow National Conference at Michigan State University in 2015.
For his Eagle Scout service project, Mosier designed and coordinated the construction and staining of three benches for Fair Park in Canfield. He attends First Federated Church in North Jackson.
He graduated from the truck and diesel program at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center in 2016 and is a member of Vienna Cougars rifle team.
Earned his Eagle
Eric Grantonic, son of Matt and Colleen Grantonic, has earned his Eagle Scout award.
He is a member of Boy Scout Troop 49, chartered to the Freedom Church in New Middletown. Eric began his Scouting career as a tiger cub with Pack 119 and continued until achieving the highest Cub Scout award, the Arrow of Light.
As a member of Troop 49, he has earned numerous leadership positions, including patrol leader, scribe and senior patrol leader.
He has earned 45 merit badges, the Mile Swim Award numerous times, and has logged several hours of community service. Summer camp was spent every year at Seven Ranges, where he earned the honorary 5-year Pipestone.
Eric’s Eagle Scout service project was organizing and directing the Cruiser Classic 5K race in New Middletown. On race day, 98 walkers and runners took to the streets and raised more than $2000 for New Middletown’s food bank.
He is a junior and an honor-roll student at Heartland Christian School in Columbiana, where he competes on the varsity track, cross country and soccer teams. He is an active member of St. Paul’s Church in New Middletown and is a member of its parish council.

Speech tourney qualifier
In her second year as a member of the Chaney Speech and Debate team, sophomore Yelisa Cortez qualified for the Ohio High School Speech League State Tournament. The tournament is Friday and Saturday in Berea.
Cortez is the Chaney Speech and Debate Team’s third state tournament qualifier. The team was revived in 2014 after years of being inactive. She also was a semifinalist for the National Qualifying Tournament, finishing in the top eight. Earlier this school year, the Chaney High School Speech and Debate Team received recognition from the Ohio House of Representatives for achieving charter membership in the state speech league.

Graceland U. president
Dr. Patricia Draves, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the University of Mount Union, has been named the 18th president of Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa.
Draves earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Mount Holyoke College and a doctor of philosophy degree in biophysical chemistry from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana.
She then completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Texas at Austin. In 1993, she joined the faculty at the University of Central Arkansas as an assistant professor, where she was later promoted to associate professor and served as the associate dean of undergraduate studies. In 2002, Draves returned to the liberal-arts environment when she moved to Monmouth College to begin a new biochemistry program.
