Magic Johnson now in charge of Lakers

los angeles

The Los Angeles Lakers fired general manager Mitch Kupchak on Tuesday and put Magic Johnson in charge of basketball operations in a major shake-up of the struggling franchise’s front office.

Lakers owner Jeanie Buss also removed her brother, Jim, from his job as the Lakers’ executive vice president of basketball operations.

Jeanie Buss then promoted Johnson, the Hall of Fame point guard who returned to the franchise earlier this year in an executive role. Johnson is the Lakers’ new president of basketball operations, reporting directly to Jeanie Buss.

Jeanie Buss made the extraordinary moves two days before the NBA’s trade deadline. The Lakers are 19-39 this season, plummeting out of contention after an encouraging 10-10 start under new coach Luke Walton, who got a strong vote of confidence from Jeanie Buss.

In a statement, Jeanie Buss said she “took a series of actions I believe will return the Lakers to the heights.”

The value of Tom Brady’s missing Super Bowl jersey is listed as $500,000 on a Houston Police Department report.

The New England Patriots quarterback is listed as the complainant in the report dated Feb. 6, the day after the Patriots came back from a 25-point deficit to defeat the Atlanta Falcons 34-28 in overtime.

Investigators have been working to identify who was in the locker room at the time the jersey was taken. A Houston police officer was stationed outside the locker room on the day of the game, but access to the location was controlled by Patriots team security.

Goalkeeper forced to quit after eating pie

london

A backup goalkeeper paid the price for eating a meat pie during his team’s landmark game against Arsenal, resigning from Sutton United as authorities launched investigations into the apparent betting stunt.

A British newspaper’s betting company, which sponsored Sutton United for Monday’s FA Cup game, had 8-1 odds that overweight reserve goalkeeper Wayne Shaw would eat a meat pie.

After Sutton used all of its substitutions and there was no chance Shaw would appear in the 2-0 loss to Arsenal, he munched on the pie while sitting on the bench.

“Wayne has offered his resignation to the chairman this afternoon and that has been accepted,” Sutton manager Paul Doswell told Sky News. “It’s a very sad end to what was a very good story.”

The footage of Shaw eating was broadcast on the BBC.

“I thought I would give them (the betting company) a bit of banter and let’s do it,” Shaw told British media.
