Wind, percussion bands to be featured at YSU concert

YOUNGSTOWN

More than 100 musicians from Fairport High School, Rochester, NY, and North Hills High School, from Pittsburgh, will come to Youngstown State University on Friday for the annual Dana School of Music Wind and Percussion Invitational concert at 7 p.m. in Stambaugh Auditorium.

During the course of the day, the visiting students will participate in master classes with Dana School of Music professors. The event will culminate with the evening concert that will feature the two guest high-school bands along with the YSU Percussion Ensemble, directed by Glenn Schaft, and the YSU Wind Ensemble, conducted by YSU Director of Bands and Orchestra Stephen L. Gage, and two soloists, Kathryn Umble, professor of flute, and Alice Wang, professor of clarinet.

Ballroom dance class at Buhl Park

HERMITAGE, PA.

Buhl Farm Park, 715 Hazen Road, will present ballroom dance classes beginning Feb. 27 in the Casino Ballroom. Classes will be taught by local dance instructor Bob McPhail.

The four-week series of classes will take place Monday evenings through March 20, with swing lessons at 6:30 p.m. and rumba lessons at 7:30 p.m. The cost is $10 per person per class, or $35 for all four swing or rumba classes, or $65 for all eight classes.

Attendees can practice what they learn at the five dances Buhl Park has scheduled this year with DJ Platter, who will play everything from oldies to current hits. Must be at least 21 years old. The dances are from 7 to 11 p.m. on March 17, May 4, July 21, Sept. 30 and Oct. 28.
