Man flees police in car with child inside

YOUNGSTOWN

A city man faces several charges after leading police on a chase through city streets with a child inside the car Monday evening.

Police said Mister Jackson, 30, fled from Austintown police which lost him on Interstate 680, according to a Youngstown police report. Austintown police began the chase in the township.

Youngstown officers began pursuit after finding the vehicle traveling on South Avenue and continued the chase to the East Side. While Jackson fled down South Forest Avenue, officers said they witnessed a 6-year-old child opening the driver’s side door and hanging onto the still-moving vehicle. At first slowing down, the suspect sped back up as the child fell to his knees on a front yard of the neighborhood.

The chase ended on Rutledge Drive, where Jackson left the car and entered a nearby house, trying to hide. Officers arrested him there.

The child’s grandmother told police she would return the child back to his mother, who lives in Farrell, Pa. Jackson is charged with fleeing and eluding police, child endangerment, receiving stolen property and driving without a license.

Marijuana charge

YOUNGSTOWN

A Seneca Avenue man faces a felony possession of marijuana charge after police found a large amount of the drug and slightly more than $1,000 cash about 2:45 p.m. Sunday during a traffic stop at Fairmont and Fifth avenues.

Reports said police officers pulled over a car driven by Dale Kennedy Jr., 23, because of an obstructed view. When officers approached the car, they said they could smell marijuana.

Police asked Kennedy to get out of the car so it could be searched. When officers searched him, they found a large bag of suspected marijuana and the cash in his pockets. He was booked into the Mahoning County jail.

Reports said Kennedy also was driving on an expired learner’s permit from 2003.

Campbell City Council will meet in executive session at 6 p.m. Wednesday in City Hall, 351 Tenney Ave., to discuss personnel. Executive sessions are closed to the public.
