BLACK HISTORY MONTH A list of area events in February to commemorate Black History Month as submitted to The Vindicator:
YOUNGSTOWN
Next Sunday: Beulah Baptist Church, 570 Sherwood Ave., a talent show with various church choirs, mime groups and readings on black history. Blane Griffen also will speak on black history and preparing young people for the future.
Thursday: Choffin Career and Technical Center, 200 E. Wood St., will celebrate its seventh annual Black History Month in the main commons area. Former Buffalo Bills NFL wide receiver and Youngstown State University graduate Donald Jones will be speaking about his NFL career and raising awareness of kidney disease, which caused him to retire early. Jones is now a football analyst for the Buffalo Bills and the Murphy Show on WGR550 and simulcast on Madison Square Garden Network. In addition, CEO and entrepreneur Sean Darby will be speaking about his eight years in prison and how the organization Project Pride opened doors for him after being released from prison. There will be two sessions: from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. and from 12:30 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. For information, contact Natalie Spencer-Scott or Loisjean Haynes Paige at 330-744-8739.
Thursday: In observance of Black History Month, the YWCA of Youngstown is offering “An Afternoon Conversation with Sarah Brown-Clark” from 2 to 4 p.m. at 25 W. Rayen Ave. Brown-Clark, Youngstown Municipal clerk of courts, is former director of the YSU Black Studies Program and former host of “Eye Opening and Thought Provoking,” a weekly radio program that consisted of readings from African- American literature. The event is free. Refreshments are available.
Friday: Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School, 2724 Mariner Ave., will host a Black History Month celebration at 1 p.m.
Saturday: The Youngstown Chapter of The Links Inc. will host a black diamond leadership brunch at 10 a.m. at the Holiday Inn, 7410 South Ave., Boardman, honoring influential black male leaders in the Mahoning Valley. Donations are $30 per person. For information, call 330-406-9550.
Saturday: Mount Hope Veterans Memorial Park Inc. will sponsor a program from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Reed’s Chapel A.M.E. Church, 1939 Jacobs Road. The event will include vendors and displays. A program at noon will feature guest speaker William J. Blake, director of student diversity at Youngstown State University. Refreshments will be served. For information, call 330-501-9808.

Friday: The African Student Union movie night will take place at 7 p.m. in James Gallery. Clint Eastwood’s film “Invictus,” which explores how a country divided can come together to celebrate athletic success, will be shown.

Tuesday and Wednesday: UAW Local 1112 will celebrate Black History Month at the GM Lordstown Assembly Plant East, 2300 Hallock Young Road, at 11 a.m.
