For the 20th year, C.H. Campbell Elementary School kicked off its annual American Heart Association Jump Rope for Heart campaign with a high-energy, music-filled assembly on Jan. 27. Fourth-grade students, dressed in Canfield Cardinal red and black, put on a jump rope show for their fellow students.

Ronie Haurin, C.H. Campbell physical education instructor, readied the students for their performance. The students have been working on their jump rope skills since kindergarten.

To start their performance, the fourth-graders entered the gym to Van Halen’s “Jump” while running and jumping rope. After a brief introduction and a jump rope for heart cheer, the fourth-grade students dazzled the crowd with their jump rope skills.

The students performed individually and in groups to the cheers of their fellow students. Some stunts the students executed were bouncing and passing a basketball to jumping students, jumping on one foot, speed jumping, synchronized jumping, double dutch, crouching to the floor, solo jumping, duo jumping, twirling while jumping, ‘push up’ jumping and cart wheeling into a twirling rope.

To end the assembly, the students were shown a video explaining what the Jump Rope for Heart program is all about, and included the personal stories of families who have been helped by the program.

The school’s Jump Rope for Heart campaign raises money for the American Heart Association, which funds lifesaving heart and stroke research and community and educational programs for youth.

Last year, C.H. Campbell students raised more than $10,000.

Jump Rope For Heart teaches students how physical fitness benefits the heart and shows that volunteering can be a fun and positive experience for the entire community.

The Jump Rope for Heart campaign is under the direction of Haurin, and the students will jump rope during their scheduled gym class. Students will collect donations for their jumping and turn them in during the week, earning prizes along the way.

Jump Rope For Heart is co-sponsored by the American Heart Association and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.
