CANFIELD

City council set dates for future projects and events.

At the request of Councilman Joe LoCicero, the city’s town hall meeting was tentatively set at the beginning of Wednesday’s council meeting.

Mayor Bernie Kosar Sr., however, suggested the town hall meeting should be hosted May 4, on the eve of the city’s Civics Day, where students spend the day learning how the local government works.

Kosar reasoned the proximity to Civics Day might help boost attendance and provide another opportunity for students to see the functions and processes of government.

Councilman John Morvay reported that construction on the new Cardinal Joint Fire District fire station on Herbert Road should conclude in June.

City Manager Joe Warino reported a number of power distributing switches in the government administration building at 104 Lisbon St. were in need of repair.

Warino said the initial cost of repairs to get the switches functional would be $15,000, but he warned that replacement would eventually be necessary and would bring the total cost of the repairs from $15,000 to $23,000. The switches are needed for the effective operation of the police dispatch center.

Construction contract bids for the third phase of the North Broad Street safety upgrade project were to be opened today.

The project faced potential funding setbacks after reviews by the Ohio Department of Transportation increased the estimated construction costs from $1.6 million to $1.8 million. Council members voted to appropriate the necessary funds to continue with the project.

In other business, council approved the installation of streetlights in the Kings Lake subdivision and announced at its next meeting it would have a resolution in place that establishes standards for beekeeping within the city.
