Phantoms hosting military event

BOARDMAN

To help promote the team’s Military Appreciation Night on Saturday, members of the Youngstown Phantoms will be at the Panera Bread on Market Street on Monday from 6-8 p.m. A portion of the food sales will benefit Disabled American Veterans.

At Saturday’s game against Team USA at the Covelli Centre, the Phantoms will wear camo uniforms that will be auctioned after the game. Proceeds from ticket sales, the auction and a raffle will go the Disabled American Veterans.

Umpires group to meet today at Saxon Club

The Youngstown Metro Umpires Association have scheduled local Ohio High School Athletic Association softball and baseball meetings today at the Saxon Club.

The softball meeting is at 1 p.m. The baseball session will be at 2:15 p.m.

All members are required four local meetings to remain in good standing with the OHSAA. Contact John Mang at 330-502-6665 for details.

Also, anyone interested in umpiring high school baseball and softball should contact Mang.

Curbstone luncheon Monday at The Avion

The Curbstone Coaches will meet for their regularly scheduled luncheon Monday at The Avion Banquet Center on Western Reserve Road in Beaver Township. The event begins at noon and the public is welcome to attend.

Also, plans are under way for the 50th Curbstone Coaches Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony which is set for May 7 at Mr. Anthony’s in Boardman. The keynote speaker will be former Oakland Raiders offensive lineman and local business man Ed Muransky.

Tickets are now available by contacting Mariel Sallee at 330-519-6819. Tickets are also available for $50 for any inductee over the last 50 years in honor of The Curbstone Coaches’ 50th anniversary.

Zallow, Morales win again for YSU track

The Youngstown State men’s and women’s track and field teams completed against some of the top teams in the Midwest on Friday and Saturday at the SPIRE Division I Invitational.

Chad Zallow continued his momentum in the hurdles with another 7.61 seconds race as the Penguins competed against teams from the Big Ten, Mid-American Conference as well as others.

That mark remains the fastest in the country and tied his school record. Finishing second was Michigan’s Drake Johnson who clocked a time of 7.93 seconds. They were the only two runners to post times under eight seconds.

For the second straight meet, Arnaldo Morales won the high jump. Morales cleared the bar at 2.11m on his final attempt to claim the win. Ohio State’s Josh Fridley and Michigan State’s Cody Stemple both missed at all three tries to advance past 2.11m.

YSU bowling team goes 3-2 in Texas

The Youngstown State bowling team beat two teams ranked in the top 15 as part of a three-win day at the Stormin’ Ladyjack Classic on Saturday. The tournament is being held at Copperfield Bowl in Houston, Texas.

The 24th-ranked Penguins went 3-2 in their five traditional team matches in the second day of the competition. YSU began the day with a 997-857 win over No. 7 Stephen F. Austin, which is the tournament’s host.

The 997 score for YSU was its highest this season for a traditional match. The Penguins followed that up with a 950-878 win over No. 13 Tulane, and YSU later defeated Southern 895-821. YSU’s losses came to Louisiana Tech (933-860) and No. 5 Vanderbilt (1,113-921).
