New Bethel Church OKs 2017 budget

New Bethel Baptist Church, 1507 Hillman St., recently adopted its 2017 budget in the amount of $569,571.

Of this amount, $360,621 will be used for general expenses; $90,950 for benevolences and missions; and $118,000 for building fund and improvements.

Officers elected for 2017 are Michel Lyons, deacon board, chairman; Ike Henry, general treasurer; Julius Livas, trustee board chairman; Reuben Gordon Sr., benevolent treasurer; Juanita Davis, church clerk; Jeanette Miller, deaconess board chairwoman; Lois York, church school superintendent; Lyons, Christian education director; and Tazwell Franklin, financial secretary.

Missions Annual Day

Catholic men conference

The Catholic Men’s Fellowship of the Diocese of Youngstown’s fifth “Gathering of Catholic Men” Conference will take place March 4 at St. Thomas Aquinas High School, 2121 Reno Drive (on the corner of state Route 62 and California Avenue).

The conference begins at 8 a.m. with a closing Mass celebrated by Bishop George V. Murry at 4 p.m. The conference will include a day of speakers, music, fellowship and much more.

Learn history, tradition of Yemenite Jews

The Jewish Community Center invites the public to enter the world of the Jewish-Yemen tradition. Learn about the fascinating history of Yemenite Jews including their immigration to Israel and the difficulties of assimilation.

Course covers basics of prison ministry

An upcoming course offered by the Office of Lay Ministry Formation of the Diocese of Youngstown will cover the basics of prison ministry for those who are interested in learning about this ministry. This course will meet on six-consecutive Thursday evenings from 7 to 9 beginning March 2 at Christ the Servant, 833 39th St. NW.

Participants will learn how to get started from a theological, logistical and practical ministry perspective all in the context of prayer, fellowship and networking with others interested in prison ministry in Stark and Portage counties. The course also will discuss other opportunities, such as ministry to the families of those incarcerated and re-entry ministry.

This program is co-sponsored by Catholic Charities Criminal Justice and Prison Ministries. St. Rose plans annual ‘Winter Warm-Up’

The annual “Winter Warm-Up” at St. Rose Church will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 26 in St. Rose Rosetta Hall, 48 E. Main St.

This year, the annual event will feature Homemade Soup Brunch for $1.25. In keeping with the church’s celebration of its 125th anniversary, a variety of soups will be sold at $1.25 per large bowl.

Take-outs also will be sold after the 7:30, 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. Masses. Pizza will be sold, as will baked goods and pop. Tickets are available at the parish office ahead of time or will be sold at the door for $1.25.

An “All Gift Card” Auction is planned. Gift cards or monetary donations toward their purchase are needed. Donations can be dropped off in the Sunday collection basket or at the parish house. Put them in a sealed envelope marked: Attention: Jan Knight. Write your name and the words “Auction” on the outside of the envelope.

Discernment Retreat weekend scheduled

If you are a man who is 18 to 50 years old and looking to gain insight on God’s call for your life, then you are invited to attend a Discernment Retreat. The focus of the weekend, Friday through noon Sunday, is on understanding one’s vocation through discernment with a special emphasis on a vocation to the priesthood.

Bishop George V. Murry of the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown is directing the retreat at Villa Maria Retreat Center, 2067 Evergreen St.

In addition to the bishop’s talks, plans include Mass, communal and private prayer, time for personal reflection, Eucharistic Adoration and the ability to speak with seminarians and ask questions.
