Charged in shooting

BROOKFIELD

A Masury man told police he pointed a gun at a boy, 14, in a Nellie Street apartment Thursday afternoon but didn’t think it was loaded.

Samual Sanford, 25, of Syme Street, fired, hitting the teen, police said. Sanford is charged with felonious assault in the shooting, which occurred at 3:50 p.m. He is also charged with receiving stolen property because the gun had been stolen in Sharon, Pa., in 1995, Brookfield police said.

Sanford is in the Trumbull County jail and will be arraigned on both charges Thursday in Eastern District Court.

21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner, reported the boy was in stable condition Thursday night at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital after surgery. Police said Sanford, the boy and another teen, 18, were in the home at the time of the shooting.

Executions postponed

COLUMBUS

Gov. John Kasich has postponed eight scheduled executions as the state continues to work through legal challenges and attempt to locate supplies of the drugs it uses to put inmates to death.

The move Friday came a couple of weeks after a federal magistrate judge blocked three executions that were scheduled through April, ruling that the new lethal-injection process adopted by the state was unconstitutional.

The postponements continue a yearslong legal challenge over Ohio’s lethal injection protocols after the execution of Dennis McGuire in January 2014.
