MINERAL RIDGE

Mineral Ridge High School was placed on lockdown during a boys varsity basketball game for about two hours Tuesday night while township police investigated a fatal shooting that occurred at state Route 46 and Prospect Street.

The shooting, in which a male was killed, occurred about one-half mile from the school, which is at 1334 Seaborn St. Weathersfield police confirmed the fatality to 21-WFMJ TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner.

Because the shooter fled on foot, Weathersfield police placed the school on lockdown at 7 p.m. as a precautionary measure until 8:16 p.m. when the lockdown was lifted, according to the Trumbull County 911 Center. A search was continuing late Tuesday.

Weathersfield Schools Superintendent Damon Dohar said he did not believe there was any immediate threat to the school or those inside it. He said the game continued, but no one was permitted to leave until police lifted the lockdown.

Shooting in parking lot

HOWLAND

Several police agencies Tuesday were outside the Howland Giant Eagle store investigating a 9:45 p.m. parking lot shooting.

An eyewitness told 21-WFMJ TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner, that a person jumped out of a car and shot another person in the lot.

Police said at least one man was taken to a hospital. A Trumbull County 911 dispatcher said whether there is a connection to an earlier shooting in Weathersfield has not been determined.

2 suspects sought

GIRARD

Police are searching for two suspects after an armed robbery of Hiland Dairy on Monday night.

An employee told police two men entered the establishment on the 700 block of Highland Avenue shortly before 10 p.m.

The employee described the suspects as two white males dressed in black, with black gloves and black ski masks; one of them had a black revolver. According to a police report, the two men took between $500 and $600 before fleeing.

Police believe the two men had attempted to rob a gas station in Weathersfield earlier Monday evening.
