River Watchers

HERMITAGE, PA.

Shenango River Watchers will host its annual public meeting at 7 p.m. Feb. 21 in the activities building at Buhl Park (directly across from the office, by the South Forker entrance).

The group will discuss the accomplishments of 2016, and what it hopes to accomplish this year. Each committee will have a chance to speak and take questions from members, volunteers and others. Volunteer opportunities will be announced. The research committee will present findings of the 2016 Summer Fish Survey of the Lower Shenango River.

Writing contest

WARREN

Kent State University at Trumbull will launch the “Excite to Write” contest for high-school juniors, seniors and honor students. It offers two options: long submissions – research papers between 1,000 and 1,700 words; and short submissions, essays and narratives between 700 and 1,000 words. Winners in each category win a $100 Barnes and Noble gift card. The runners-up win $50 Barnes and Noble gift cards. Winners are also invited along with their family and teachers to a special reception. The contest deadline is April 16. Scholarships open

Application windows for four of Ohio’s scholarship programs are open for the 2017-18 school year.

The application deadline for the Jon Peterson Special Needs Scholarship Program is April 15. Students applying for a Cleveland Scholarship, EdChoice Scholarship or Income-Based Scholarship must apply before April 30. Public meeting

YOUNGSTOWN

The city will host a public meeting at 10 a.m. Friday in the Covelli Centre community room to discuss the first phase of the Phelps Street sewer-replacement project. It involves relocation of various utilities and the replacement of the sanitary sewer between West Federal and West Commerce streets.
