Eighth-grade student Delaney Pallo was crowned the 2016 school champion of the annual Canfield Village Middle School Spelling Bee on Dec. 21.

Each grade level crowned a winner, with Aubree Neuhaus and Harjote Kaur named fifth-grade co-champs, Grace Min named sixth-grade champion, Jaelyn Palmer named seventh-grade champion and Maggie Carrier named runner-up and eighth-grade champion. All grade level champions received a Barnes and Noble gift card, courtesy of the principal’s fund, while Carrier and Pallo also received a one-year online subscription to Britannica Kids, courtesy of the Scripps National Spelling Bee Program.

Pallo also earned a spot in and will represent CVMS in The Vindicator Regional Spelling Bee at Youngstown State University on March 11, for the chance to move on to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

The 49 student spellers qualified for the bee by winning a classroom spelling bee, with each homeroom class having a representative, along with one student from each individual Language Arts class and four winners from last year.

“Welcome and thank you for coming. We congratulate and welcome 49 spellers to the competition. Thank you to parents and families who have supported and helped these spellers prepare,” said Erica Putro, spelling bee coordinator.

Putro then turned over the spelling bee to guest pronouncer, Youngstown State University English professor Dr. Jeffrey Buchanan.

After eight rounds, the final two spellers, Pallo and Carrier, faced off.

Putro explained that for the one word championship round, a student must spell his or her word correctly and then spell one more word correctly to be named overall spelling bee champion.

In the ninth round, Pallo spelled the word ‘lavish’ correctly, and then moved on to spell the word ‘expansive’ correctly to be named the 2016 CVMS Spelling Bee Champion.

Spelling bee judges included Putro, Julie Webb, Michelle Napolitano, Mary Lou Thacker, Melissa Nagy, Emily Sipe and Vicki Latimer.
