Local church hosts seminar
Canfield United Methodist Church, located at 27 S. Broad Street, will present the seminar “Effective Communication Strategies to those with Dementia and Alzheimer’s” on Feb. 5 from 2:30–4 p.m. Dementia affects memory, thinking, behavior and the ability to care for oneself or to function safely and independently in the world. As people with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia’s progress in their journey and the ability to use words is lost, families need new ways to connect. The seminar is open to the public and will explore how communication takes place when someone has Alzheimer’s, learn to decode the verbal and behavioral messages delivered by someone with dementia, and identify strategies to help you connect and communicate at each stage of the disease. Ulster Project Wine Taste
The Mahoning Valley Ulster Project is set to host its annual Wine Taste on Feb. 12 at Drake’s Landing in Canfield from 2-5 p.m. This is a major fundraiser for the Ulster Project. Tickets to the event are $35 per person and include a wine and beer taste, an assortment of light appetizers, dessert, a Chinese auction, 50/50 raffle and giveaways. The Mahoning Valley Ulster project is a summer exchange program, which brings together teen leaders from Northern Ireland and the United States. The program offers spiritual, social and service opportunities to help the students discover the common ground they share despite religious differences. Each year, Valley families play host to more than a dozen Northern Irish teens for this enriching experience. More than $20,000 must be raised for air fare and expenses for the July program. Knitting guild to meet on Feb. 14
The Western Reserve Knitting Guild will meet on Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. at the Rotary Community Building in Fair Park in Canfield. A program of a knitted headband with right and left twists will be presented by Shawn Anderson. Those wishing to participate should bring size 8 US circular knitting needles, scissors, a stitch marker and a tapestry needle. The pattern will be provided. Newcomers of Mahoning Valley Book Club will be meeting on Feb. 9 and will be discussing a book by David Baldacci, “The Camel Club.” The Movie Group saw “La La Land” in January and is looking forward to seeing another good movie on Feb. 15. Needlework will resume meeting on Feb. 7 and a restaurant and date will be chosen for Roundtowners, also in February. The birthday luncheon will be announced at the luncheon in January. The luncheon in February will be on the 22nd at 11:30 a.m. at the Poland library. Lunch will be catered by Kravitz. Attorney and former judge Shirley Christian will be speaking. PLYMC offers online learning service
The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County (PLYMC) is offering a free service which connects library cardholders to the popular learning platform, Lynda.com. Library customers can get to the free Lynda.com offerings by using the PLYMC portal through a link on the LibraryVisit.org website. Look on the horizontal menu under “LEARN” for the link. Library customers can learn anytime, day or night. Lynda.com is available online 24/7. The learning resource offers more than 3,000 courses and 150,000 video tutorials taught by experts. Some available areas include 3-D, animation, audio, business, design, home computing, photography, video, the web, technical skills, business techniques, creative skills and more. Lynda.com is a paid service which is being provided free of charge to PLYMC cardholders through the library’s website: LibraryVisit.org. Ohio residents who don’t have a card will find it easy to sign up. With a digital card, online offerings such as Lynda.com can be used without worry about fines or fees. ABWA meeting to be Feb. 14
The Mill Creek Chapter of American Business Women’s Association will host its Feb. 14 meeting at A La Cart in Canfield. Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. and costs $18. The menu consists of city chicken and lemon chicken, red skin potatoes, California blend vegetables, tossed salad, cole slaw, Jello, rolls and beverages and dessert. The guest speaker for the evening will be owner of Mr. Darby’s, Bob Neapolitano. The new store is on Market Street, next to Antones. A short meeting will follow. The public is invited. Friendly Squares to have monthly dance
The Niles Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on Feb. 11 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Dress is casual and there is a $6 donation per person at the door. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. The theme this month is Valentine’s Day, so wear something red if you so desire and celebrate the holiday with the Friendly Squares. Gene Hammond will be the caller. Plat Books available
An updated Mahoning County Plat Book is now available at the OSU Extension Office in Canfield. This publication contains township maps of the entire county, showing plat maps (including all rural landowners) with detailed information on each section. The book also contains an alphabetical list of land owners relating to the page and section of the plat book. The details of each parcel include the outline of the parcel, who owns the land and how many acres are included. The book is published by Farm and Home Publishers (FHP). FHP uses county and townships offices, ODOT information and 911 information to produce this accurate map. The sale of the Mahoning County Plat Book is a fundraiser for the Mahoning County 4-H program. This book makes a great gift for the avid hunter, hiker or bird watcher of the family. Updated full-color Index Maps show each township’s geographic location in detail. Each plat book is $25 plus tax (totaling $26.69). GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg).
