Beeghly Oak’s residents celebrated their monthly karaoke program a little different this month by judging a wedding soup contest on Jan. 17.
Ed Marsco, owner of Simply Ed Karaoke, brings his equipment to Beeghly Oaks once a month for the residents to participate in karaoke. This month he decided to make things a little more different and suggested having a wedding soup contest.
Maureen McCarty, activities direction, Marsco and Rose Carano, director of housekeeping, all made wedding soup to bring in for the residents to judge. Any of the residents could volunteer to be a judge and if they didn’t want to judge they could still enjoy the different wedding soups.
The karaoke program began as it would every other time. Some residents came to sing, others came to enjoy the music and soup. One resident, Harold Thomson, has been in a band for most of his life and still enjoys singing blues music.
“It’s nice being my age and still doing something I love,” said Thomson.
Thomson still plays the drums in his band from time to time. He doesn’t travel like he used to, but playing music makes him feel good. Thomson has traveled to places like Las Vegas and New York. Many of the residents and Beeghly Oaks staff love listening and dancing along to Thomson’s singing.
After residents had the chance to sing and the soup was warmed up, there were a few residents who offered to be a judge. Those residents got a cup of soup, each labeled with a number so they didn’t know who made what soup.
While the votes were being tallied, the rest of the residents continued singing and eating the soup. After votes were counted, the winner was announced. In first place was McCarty, with Marsco in second and Carano in third.
McCarty said this is something the residents have been looking forward to and she hopes to continue providing programs that coordinate with the residents’ interests.
