New president elected for education service center

Richard S. Scarsella was elected president of the Mahoning County Education Service Center during a recent meeting.

Scarsella was elected to the governing board of MCESC in November 2005, and was appointed to the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center at that time. He is the vocational supervisor for Choffin Career and Technical Center.

Scarsella graduated from Boston College with a bachelor’s degree in history and secondary education, and earned master’s degrees in education administration and special education from Youngstown State University. He also earned a transition to work endorsement from Kent State University.

Non-profit work has included board positions with Boardman Boosters, the executive cabinet of St. Charles Home and School, Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor and Brier Hill Cultural Center. He is a board member for Youngstown Steel Heritage Museum, Ethnic Heritage Society and St. Jerome Mission College Advisory Board. He was recently appointed to the board of commissioners interview committee and the park citizens’ advisory development committee for Mill Creek MetroParks.

As a historian, he is chairman of the William Holmes McGuffey Historical Society in Boardman and he founded several Idora Park historical societies.

He is a member of Mahoning Soil and Water Conservation board of supervisors, MCCTC Foundation, Boardman Civic Association and Friends of Boardman Library. He also represented Boardman on the Mahoning Valley Vision for Education task force.

Scarsella is married to Atty. Debbie Mettee. They have a daughter, Natalie Scarsella Friend.
