Met replaces Levine as ‘Tosca’ opens

NEW YORK

The Metropolitan Opera’s new production of Puccini’s “Tosca” opens on New Year’s Eve and given the opera’s plot, public discussion of sexual improprieties is on the minds of the cast.

The opera centers on a police chief telling a famous singer he will pardon her boyfriend if she submits to him.

Sir David McVicar’s staging features a number of replacements in the cast, including conductor James Levine. The Met music director emeritus was suspended in December following allegations of sexual misconduct, which Levine denies.

The Jan. 27 matinee will be televised to movie theaters worldwide.

Rocker settles suit over his arrest

OKLAHOMA CITY

A death metal drummer has accepted a $30,000 settlement to end his federal lawsuit over his arrest in Oklahoma City during which he suffered a broken arm.

Phil Dubois-Coyne sued Oklahoma City officials and the police officers involved in his 2014 arrest for public intoxication, saying they used excessive force. He accepted the $30,000 settlement earlier this month, and city officials did not admit any liability.

Police said Dubois-Coyne was drunk and chanting expletives at the officers, but his attorney argued that Dubois-Coyne was just repeating the lyrics of a heavy metal song.
