1890: The Wounded Knee massacre takes place in South Dakota as an estimated 300 Sioux Indians are killed by U.S. troops sent to disarm them.

1940: During World War II, Germany drops incendiary bombs on London, setting off what would come to be known as “The Second Great Fire of London.”

1957: Singers Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme are married in Las Vegas (the marriage lasted until Gorme’s death in 2013).

1975: A bomb explodes in the main terminal of New York’s LaGuardia Airport, killing 11 people (It’s never been determined who was responsible).

2007: The New England Patriots end their regular season with a remarkable 16-0 record following a 38-35 comeback victory over the New York Giants. (New England became the first NFL team since the 1972 Dolphins to win every game on the schedule.)

2012: Maine’s same-sex marriage law goes into effect.

2016: The United States strikes back at Russia for hacking the U.S. presidential campaign with a sweeping set of punishments targeting Russia’s spy agencies and diplomats; Moscow calls the Obama administration “losers” and threatens retaliation.

1992: Sharon, Pa., firefighters say that if they are called upon to respond to calls in Farrell when that city lays off half of its eight-man force, Sharon firefighters should get a raise in their $24,879 annual salary. That’s not likely, says Mayor Robert T. Price.

Warren police release a composite sketch of a man who raped a 12-year-old girl and, they believe, attacked a 10-year-old boy and 19-year-old woman.

Ohio Edison and Youngstown are close to reaching a new 10-year franchise deal, which would end any talk of Youngstown setting up its own electricity service into the next century.

1977: Shenango Inc. of Neville Island, Pa., announces plans to install two 75-ton Ajax induction melting furnaces at its Shenango Inc. division in Sharpsville, Pa.

The three-story Liberty Hotel in New Castle is reduced to rubble by a fire of undetermined origin. The building had been unoccupied since 23 residents were removed several months ago after it was declared a fire hazard.

North Lima police question the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Department decision to seek an arrest warrant for Linda Hamilton, saying they didn’t think there was evidence linking the missing woman to the murders of her husband and a Kittaning, Pa., truck driver.

1967: Campbell City Council declines to act on a proposed $800,000 low-income housing project for the city, apparently killing the issue.

Adolph Johnson & Son, general contractors, take out a $210,000 building permit for an expansion of General Extrusions on Lake Park Road.

Area law-enforcement agencies, hopeful after a fatality-free Christmas weekend, will intensify their efforts to keep the streets safe during the New Year’s holiday.

1942: The War Department notifies Youngstown College that students in the enlisted reserve corps will be called to duty some time after Feb. 1. About 83 students will be affected.

All owners of automobiles must have their tires inspected before Jan. 31, 1943, and periodically thereafter, the Office of Price Administration announces.
