Historical Society announces 2018 program calendar

The Boardman Historical Society recently announced a 2018 general interest program calendar and membership drive.

All programs take place at the Boardman library and are free and open to the public. Reservations are suggested and walk-ins are admitted based upon seating availability. For program reservations, phone BHS board member, Dona Hammond, at 330-726-0651.

Membership to the historical society is open to the public as well, with single memberships, family memberships, business memberships and other membership levels available. Members receive advanced notice concerning society programs and guaranteed reservation event seating.

The programs for 2018 include: Jan. 13 - Bill Farragher, pioneer steel industry consultant, will recall the decline and fall of the Mahoning Valley steel companies, including the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company; Feb. 10 - Rick Rowlands, founder of the Youngstown Steel Heritage Museum, will share steel industry history and his museum’s collection, which includes the famed Tod Engine; March 10 - Sean Posey, local author and historian, will highlight memories based upon his book, “Historic Theaters of Youngstown and Mahoning Valley,” including the Palace, Warner, State and Paramount theaters and more; April 14 - Tom Welsh, prolific local author and historian, will discuss his book, “Strouss’: Youngstown’s Dependable Department Store,” revealing how the store was created, operated and thrived, and May 1 - J.E. “Jack” Ballantine, veteran area actor, producer and director, will speak on his new book, “Why I Did It!” retelling his local theater career and stars he has performed with on the stage.

The Boardman Historical Society maintains a museum of Boardman and local artifacts at Boardman Park in the historic Dechon House. Tours are by appointment only. The society was instrumental in the purchase of St. James Episcopal Church, which it moved to Boardman Park and renamed the St. James Meeting House.
