Canfield Local Schools students recognized a familiar face in class, but it wasn’t their teacher, as the administrative team in the school district returned to the classroom for a day Dec. 12.
The Canfield Local Schools Superintendent, Director of Curriculum, Director of Special Education and all principals and assistant principals spent the day teaching at the high school, middle school and both elementary schools.
“As a superintendent, sometimes we get in our day-to-day work of going to meetings and visiting schools but not remembering what it’s like to put on a teacher’s hat. This day is perfect to remind the entire administrative team as to why we chose this worthwhile profession,” said Canfield Local Schools Superintendent Alex Geordan.
Canfield Village Middle School Principal Judd Rubin took over fifth-grade Language Arts teacher Julie Webb’s class for the day. Before becoming principal, Rubin taught fourth grade for eight years and also taught Career based intervention for eighth- and ninth-graders for six years, including Language Arts and a real world application class.
Rubin chose to teach Webb’s class for the day because he loved teaching Language Arts.
“I loved teaching language arts and I have observed Mrs. Webb’s class several times and love her teaching style and rapport she has with her kids. We also did a language collaborative workshop my first year,” Rubin said.
Rubin said he very much enjoyed going back to the classroom and will always remember this experience.
“I really enjoyed my experience. I was nervous at first, but after my first few minutes, I became very comfortable in front of them. I realized that kids really haven’t changed since I was in the classroom They are still eager to learn and please. I appreciate the work Mrs. Webb put in to make our lesson successful. It was something I will remember and look forward to following those students I taught throughout their middle school years,” Rubin said.
Webb said she thinks this day is beneficial to both the administration and the students.
“It’s important for the administrators to get into the classroom to provide them a different perspective than when they walk through or observe our classes or do an evaluation. It’s important for them to be the lead in the classroom to be able to see the students’ expectations, and that’s beneficial to everyone. Teachers can talk until they are blue in the face in meetings, but with this, the administrators actually see and teach and experience the lessons, which is helpful to the students, administrators and teachers,” Webb said.
