Mill Creek ABWA chpater to meet
The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will host its Jan. 9 meeting at A La Cart Catering in Canfield beginning with networking at 6 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. The menu includes creamed chicken over biscuit, roast pork, mashed potatoes, peas and carrots, salad, applesauce, Jell-O and dessert. Basic Computer Class offered at the library

Lego My Library presented in January
Meet and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Canfield library on Jan. 6 at 2:30 p.m. and again on Jan. 17 at 6 p.m. Legos will be provided at this program for ages 6 and up.
Bonding with babies and books
This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months at the Canfield library every Thursday in January at 10 a.m. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.
Lunch and learn series: land as your legacy program
Proper land insurance can put the mind at ease and that will be the focus of January’s Lunch and Learn program on Jan. 5 at 11:30 a.m. with an educational program ending at 1 p.m. The program speaker, Tony Daprile, Nationwide Insurance and Farm Bureau Member, will cover the basics of farm insurance, as well any questions. Registration for this event is $5, which includes the program, lunch and handouts. Registration can be mailed or dropped off at Mahoning County Extension, located at 490 S. Broad St. in Canfield. Seating is limited and is filled on a first come, first serve basis, so register early. Weekly square dance lessons to begin Jan. 9
The Friendly Squares will begin a second session of weekly square dance lessons for beginners. The introductory session will be Jan. 9 from 7-9 p.m. Each weekly session builds upon the previous session and will include learning new steps along with plenty of review and practice each week to help attendees master the moves. The sessions are designed to cover all the steps in the basic square dance program. Gene Hammond will be the instructor. The Tuesday evening sessions will run through April and there is a nominal fee of $6 per person per lesson. The Friendly Squares will also host their next dance on Jan. 13 at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Gene Hammond will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be calling line dances. Dress is casual and there is a $6 donation per person at the door. Boy Scouts to participate in gold rush
The Whispering Pines Distract Klondike Gold Rush will take place the weekend of Jan. 5-7 at Great Trail Council’s Camp Stambaugh, where Boy Scouts from throughout Mahoning County and Hubbard will converge at the camp in search of gold, fun and the excitement of the Klondike Gold Rush. A Scout Klondike Derby is based on the real-life struggles encountered by the men and dogs crossing the frozen Klondike in search of wealth in the gold fields. Scouts will have the opportunity to conquer some of the same challenges that these adventures faced, in hopes of finding their own treasure. The Scouts will experience seven stations to test their abilities and earn gold. Achieving ideal weight for life workshop offered
Dr. Ted Suzelis, ND, is offering a 3-hour personalized weight loss workshop at the Ohio Naturopathic Wellness Center in Boardman on Jan. 6 from 9 a.m. until noon. Play Bookopoly at the library
Teens and adults, play Bookopoly for fun and prizes. Pick up your game board and instructions at any branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County and play Bookopoly from Jan. 1 through March 31. Work your way around the game board by completing tasks, such as checking out a book, visiting our Pop-up Library or getting out into the community. Completing color sets earns you an entry slip for a prize drawing for a $10 Amazon gift card. Complete the entire board to enter into a drawing to win a Kindle Fire. Show me the bunny
Peter Rabbit is coming to the Canfield library on Jan. 27 at 2:30 p.m. to celebrate the upcoming movie release of Beatrix Potter’s classic tale of a rebellious rabbit trying to sneak into Farmer McGregor’s vegetable garden. Learn more about the author and get “hoppy” with games, activities and a craft. Light refreshments will be provided at this program for children of all ages.

Create a DIY animal planter at the library
Turn a plastic animal toy into a planter on Jan. 20 at 2:30 p.m. at the Canfield library. Soil and a plant will be provided. This program is for tweens, ages 9-12.
Drive through dinners offered at Lord of Life Church
Drive through chicken dinners will be offered at Lord of Life Church, located at 550 N Broad Street in Canfield, on Jan. 25 from 3-6 p.m. The dinners will consist of chicken Parmesan, spaghetti, three bean salad, a roll and butter, and cake. The cost is $9 per dinner (cash only) and the proceeds will help with ministry expenses. Each customer will get $1 off the purchase price if they bring a can of vegetables that will be donated to the needy via the Rescue Mission or some other worthwhile organization. Mahoning County Career and Technical Center named to 2018 Elite 50 list of Nation’s Top Hospitality Programs
The Mahoning County Career and Technical Center has been named to the 2018 Elite 50, an annual selection of the top 50 secondary school hospitality programs in the nation. The Elite 50 list recognizes high schools as well as career and technical centers that have demonstrated a commitment to excellence in hospitality education. These schools set the standard for secondary school training in culinary arts, baking and pastry arts and/or hospitality management. Criteria for the schools selected for the Elite 50 included an original recipe with photos or a restaurant management design and instructor educational/certification background and informational materials such as videos or brochures about the school’s program. Further consideration was given to schools that operate a restaurant or catering service as part of their culinary and hospitality training. January Gathering Place event date announced
A Gathering Place event will be presented on Jan. 8 at 11 a.m. at the Lord of Life Church, located at 550 N Broad Street in Canfield. This program is by the Mahoning County Green Team. It will focus on recycling and include information on items that can/cannot be recycled and the proper way to recycle various items. Lunch will be provided by The Woodlands and guests are to arrive promptly at 11 a.m.
This is a free community outreach social program offered to all senior citizens that is offered on the second Monday of every month. Different games and activities are also offered. Read around the room
Join the 2018 Reading Challenge to “read around the Canfield library book club room.” Read six titles from the book club room for the winter challenge, from Jan. 1 until March 31, and fill out the Reading Challenge form as an entry into a drawing for a reader’s prize pack. E-books and audiobooks of book club titles are acceptable, and all entries must be submitted by March 31; winner drawn on April 4. One entry per person is permitted at this program for adults.

Junior League hosts New York trip
The Junior League of Youngstown is hosting a round trip from Youngstown to New York City April 13-15. Spend the day as you wish for your selection of Broadway plays, shopping, sightseeing and dining. The “NYE Ball Drop” price is $139 per person if paid in full by Dec. 31 and $149 per person without a discount. Payment plans are accepted and must be paid in full by March 14 and will be $149 per person. Tickets are available until March 14 for the trip. Your ticket is transferable in the event you are unable to attend. No cash refunds will be issued. All minors must be accompanied by an adult. Meals on Wheels of Mahoning County joins Sharing the Love campaign
Meals on Wheels of Mahoning County recently announced that it will be participating in the tenth annual Subaru Share the Love Event as a member of Meals on Wheels America – one of four national Share the Love charitable partners supported through the promotion. From Nov. 16 until Jan. 2, Subaru of America will donate $250 for every new Subaru vehicle sold or leased to the customer’s choice of participating charity. Participating Meals on Wheels America members, like Meals on Wheels of Mahoning County, will receive a share of the donation raised by Subaru in their state. Meals on Wheels has partnered with Boardman Subaru in Boardman to raise awareness for the popular year-end sales and giving event, and drive support for Meals on Wheels by participating in Mill Creek Park’s ‘Winter Celebration- Toyland’ at the annual holiday tree walk at the Davis Center. Old Fashioned Makerspace - dolls and puppets at the library
In a time before today’s technology, children had to come up with their own toys. Bring your imagination to the Canfield library on Jan. 13 at 2:30 p.m. and learn how to make several, including corn husk, clothespin, finger and paper puppets/dolls. All materials provided, including paint and glue. This program is for ages 4-13.
Tales to Tails January program announced
Read to your favorite therapy dogs at the Canfield library on Jan. 8 at 6 p.m. This program for school-aged children helps develop reading skills, promotes confidence and encourages a love of reading. Bring a book of your choice or the librarians will find one for you. Therapy dogs provided by Pawz for People, a Community Partner of Pet Partners, a local Pet Therapy group.
Stephen King Constant Readers Club announces January meeting
Join the Canfield library in discussing Stephen King’s riveting stories, as well as other captivating tales by his peers on Jan. 9 at 6:30 p.m. In January, the club will continue its journey to the Dark Tower with book two of the series, “The Dark Tower II: The Drawing of the Three” by Stephen King, followed by a preview of new and exciting upcoming titles. Come and read to the Canfield library’s favorite therapy dogs. Give them a “High Five” to welcome them to the library. Bring your own book, or the library will find one for you. The Mahoning Valley Corvettes joins in with Salem car cruise for event
The call to take over The Salem Super cruise, Salem’s largest annual event attracting thousands, was recently answered by The Mahoning Valley Corvettes. The non-profit car club dates back to 1962 including members from every surrounding community and Salem. Many of the club members have enjoyed the Salem Super Cruise and will now partner with the City of Salem to put on the event entering its 14th year. The Salem Super Cruise is open to all cars and trucks, not just Corvettes. Motorcycles are also welcome. The weekend benefits the Second Harvest Foodbank, which feeds many hungry local families. The event will take place June 7-10 and will feature activities, some free, including a parade, car show, food, live bands and more. The Mahoning Valley Corvettes look forward to partnering with the City of Salem to provide a this weekend for the entire family.

GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
