Mill Creek ABWA chpater to meet
The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will host its Jan. 9 meeting at A La Cart Catering in Canfield beginning with networking at 6 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. The menu includes creamed chicken over biscuit, roast pork, mashed potatoes, peas and carrots, salad, applesauce, Jell-O and dessert. Lego My Library presented in January
Meet and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Boardman library on Jan. 13 at 10 a.m. Legos will be provided at this program for ages 6 and up.
Weekly square dance lessons to begin Jan. 9
The Friendly Squares will begin a second session of weekly square dance lessons for beginners. The introductory session will be Jan. 9 from 7-9 p.m. Each weekly session builds upon the previous session and will include learning new steps along with plenty of review and practice each week to help attendees master the moves. The sessions are designed to cover all the steps in the basic square dance program. Gene Hammond will be the instructor. The Tuesday evening sessions will run through April and there is a nominal fee of $6 per person per lesson. The Friendly Squares will also host their next dance on Jan. 13 at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Gene Hammond will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be calling line dances. Dress is casual and there is a $6 donation per person at the door. Boy Scouts to participate in gold rush
The Whispering Pines Distract Klondike Gold Rush will take place the weekend of Jan. 5-7 at Great Trail Council’s Camp Stambaugh, where Boy Scouts from throughout Mahoning County and Hubbard will converge at the camp in search of gold, fun and the excitement of the Klondike Gold Rush. A Scout Klondike Derby is based on the real-life struggles encountered by the men and dogs crossing the frozen Klondike in search of wealth in the gold fields. Scouts will have the opportunity to conquer some of the same challenges that these adventures faced, in hopes of finding their own treasure. The Scouts will experience seven stations to test their abilities and earn gold. Achieving ideal weight for life workshop offered
Dr. Ted Suzelis, ND, is offering a 3-hour personalized weight loss workshop at the Ohio Naturopathic Wellness Center in Boardman on Jan. 6 from 9 a.m. until noon. Play Bookopoly at the library
Teens and adults, play Bookopoly for fun and prizes. Pick up your game board and instructions at any branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County and play Bookopoly from Jan. 1 through March 31. Work your way around the game board by completing tasks, such as checking out a book, visiting our Pop-up Library or getting out into the community. Completing color sets earns you an entry slip for a prize drawing for a $10 Amazon gift card. Complete the entire board to enter into a drawing to win a Kindle Fire. The contest ends March 31 and all prizes will be awarded on April 16.
January I Read YA! Book Club to be Jan. 22
Adult fans of young adult literature from ages 18 and up, this book club is for you. Talk about why you like YA at the Boardman library on Jan. 22 at 6:30 p.m. The January book for discussion is “What to Say Next” by Julie Buxbaum.
Join a peg loom weaving class
Make a dish cloth or a small blanket for a stuffed toy. Learn how to do peg loom weaving with simple household supplies at the Boardman library on Jan. 25 at 7 p.m. Bring 1-2 balls of cotton or acrylic yarn. Pre-registration is required for this one-hour program that is a family program for school-age children, teens and adults.

Join D&D at the library
Do you like fantasy and have a good imagination? Join the library’s beginners Dungeons and Dragons club and join the adventure on Jan. 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the Boardman library. Refreshments and snacks are provided at this program for grades 7-12.
Games and Gizmos Galore at the library
Play games, share a story and make a flying toy gizmo that flies. Join this one-hour family program for children of all ages at the Boardman library on Jan. 11 at 7 p.m.. Preschoolers must attend with an adult.
Junior League hosts New York trip
The Junior League of Youngstown is hosting a round trip from Youngstown to New York City April 13-15. Spend the day as you wish for your selection of Broadway plays, shopping, sightseeing and dining. The “NYE Ball Drop” price is $139 per person if paid in full by Dec. 31 and $149 per person without a discount. Payment plans are accepted and must be paid in full by March 14 and will be $149 per person. Tickets are available until March 14 for the trip. Your ticket is transferable in the event you are unable to attend. No cash refunds will be issued. All minors must be accompanied by an adult. Meals on Wheels of Mahoning County joins Sharing the Love campaign
Meals on Wheels of Mahoning County recently announced that it will be participating in the tenth annual Subaru Share the Love Event as a member of Meals on Wheels America – one of four national Share the Love charitable partners supported through the promotion. From Nov. 16 until Jan. 2, Subaru of America will donate $250 for every new Subaru vehicle sold or leased to the customer’s choice of participating charity. Participating Meals on Wheels America members, like Meals on Wheels of Mahoning County, will receive a share of the donation raised by Subaru in their state. Meals on Wheels has partnered with Boardman Subaru in Boardman to raise awareness for the popular year-end sales and giving event, and drive support for Meals on Wheels by participating in Mill Creek Park’s ‘Winter Celebration- Toyland’ at the annual holiday tree walk at the Davis Center. Teen Advisory Board meeting to be Jan. 3
Check out the monthly TAB meeting the first Wednesday of the month at the Boardman library. This month’s event will take place on Jan. 3 at 6:30-8 p.m. Help plan and support teen activities at the library. Meet new people and have fun. Holiday library closings announced for the end of the year
All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed on Dec. 30, 31 and Jan. 1, for the New Year holiday, and on Jan. 15 for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Registration is open for Herbology Part 1
Board-certified Naturopath, Dr. Danni, is now taking registrations for Part 1 of her popular Herbology series of courses. This course will be the foundations for parts 2, 3 and 4, which will be offered throughout the year (though it is not a requirement to take them sequentially.) This is a three-week course on Thursdays starting Jan. 18 from 7-8:30 p.m. Registration is at 6:30 p.m. Classes will take place at ETI Technical College, located at 2076 Youngstown Warren Road in Niles. The cost to attend is a $55 donation to the Phoenix House Building Fund. The focus of Herbology Part 1 is nutritives (things that provide nourishment) in the form of poultices, infusions and syrups. This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Boardman library every Tuesday in January at 10 a.m.
Local team has fundraiser
The Canfield Girls Basketball Boosters will host Designer Bag Bingo at St. Michaels Parish Family Life Center on Jan. 20, 2018. Thirteen games of bingo will be played, with an authentic designer handbag, including Kate Spade, Michael Kors, Coach, Tory Birch, Versace, Roberto Cavalli and Phillip Lim, awarded as the prize for each game. The handbag for the grand finale game will include the highest valued handbag filled with gift cards. Other raffles will be offered. Tickets are $40 pre-sale and $45 at the door and include 12 rounds of bingo, grand finale bingo, hors d’oeuvres and one drink ticket. Additional bingo cards and daubers will be available to purchase. A cash bar of beer and wine will also be offered. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with bingo beginning at 6 p.m. All funds raised will benefit the Lady Cards Basketball program. GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
