The Austintown library hosted a family game day on Nov. 25 with the library’s collection of games.

Librarian Starr Jones monitored the event. Families, including Jones’s family, came and went freely throughout the day. The library put on the event from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.

On a table by the door, the library placed their collection of board games, playing cards, dice and dominoes. Their games included classic games like “Scrabble” and “Boggle,” as well as newer games such as “Would You Rather?” and “Escape Room: The Game.”

The library also had giant versions of classic games. They had a large-sized “Jenga” set on a table and a giant “Connect Four” and a big version of “Ker Plunk!” on the floor.

They had sports related games as well. They had a basketball toss game in the corner of the room. The game came with four basketballs and two hoops. Families played against each other for the higher score. They also had a foosball table that could be flipped into an air hockey or miniature pool table.

In the back of the room, the library connected an Xbox 360 to their projector screen. They used the gaming system’s Kinect technology to play the game “Kinect Adventures,” where players use their bodies as opposed to a controller.

Jones said the library already had the materials for the game night, so they decided it would be a fun thing to do that would not cost the library. The goal for the event is to give families the opportunity to play games and have fun.

The library had a similar game night in September and decided to do it again during the holiday break. They plan to make the event a monthly happening starting next year. The library also has a Strategy Board Game event every month for teens and adults as opposed to the whole family.
