Local church has Christmas Eve service
Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, located at 2985 Center Road in Poland, will celebrate the birth of Jesus with a worship on Christmas Eve (Dec. 24) at 7 p.m. The service will include special music, Holy Communion and the lighting of candles. All are welcome. For more information, call 330-757-3272.

Play Bookopoly at the library
Teens and adults, play Bookopoly for fun and prizes. Pick up your game board and instructions at any branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County and play Bookopoly from Jan. 1 through March 31. Work your way around the game board by completing tasks, such as checking out a book, visiting our Pop-up Library or getting out into the community. Completing color sets earns you an entry slip for a prize drawing for a $10 Amazon gift card. Complete the entire board to enter into a drawing to win a Kindle Fire. The contest ends March 31 and all prizes will be awarded on April 16.
Library bounces with excitement for Peter Rabbit
Peter Rabbit is coming to the Poland library on Jan. 25 at 6:30 p.m. to celebrate the upcoming movie release of Beatrix Potter’s classic tale of a rebellious rabbit trying to sneak into Farmer McGregor’s vegetable garden. Learn more about the author and get “hoppy” with games, activities and a craft. Light refreshments will be provided at this program for children of all ages.

“Choose kind.” That is the precept surrounding the movie and bestselling novel “Wonder” by R. J. Palacio. Meet Poland High School graduate Freddie Seitz, along with his mother, at the Poland library on Jan. 11 at 6 p.m. and learn about their family’s journey of living with a facial difference.
Junior League hosts New York trip
The Junior League of Youngstown is hosting a round trip from Youngstown to New York City April 13-15. Spend the day as you wish for your selection of Broadway plays, shopping, sightseeing and dining. The “NYE Ball Drop” price is $139 per person if paid in full by Dec. 31 and $149 per person without a discount. Payment plans are accepted and must be paid in full by March 14 and will be $149 per person. Tickets are available until March 14 for the trip. Your ticket is transferable in the event you are unable to attend. No cash refunds will be issued. All minors must be accompanied by an adult. Since its founding in 1901 by social activist Mary Harriman, The Junior League has evolved into one of the oldest, largest and most effective women’s volunteer organizations in the world, encompassing more than 150,000 women in the 291 Leagues in four countries. Snack-N-Sign program hosted at the library
Fifth- through eighth-graders, go to the Poland library after school on Jan. 26 at 3:30 p.m. to learn sign language and about Deaf culture through fun, interactive games and activities. A snack will be provided.
Meals on Wheels of Mahoning County joins Sharing the Love campaign
Meals on Wheels of Mahoning County recently announced that it will be participating in the tenth annual Subaru Share the Love Event as a member of Meals on Wheels America – one of four national Share the Love charitable partners supported through the promotion. From Nov. 16 until Jan. 2, Subaru of America will donate $250 for every new Subaru vehicle sold or leased to the customer’s choice of participating charity. Participating Meals on Wheels America members, like Meals on Wheels of Mahoning County, will receive a share of the donation raised by Subaru in their state. Meals on Wheels has partnered with Boardman Subaru in Boardman to raise awareness for the popular year-end sales and giving event, and drive support for Meals on Wheels by participating in Mill Creek Park’s ‘Winter Celebration- Toyland’ at the annual holiday tree walk at the Davis Center. Cardinal Mooney announces alumni basketball game in honor of Alumnus Dave Petty
On Dec. 27 from 6-10 p.m., Cardinal Mooney High School, located at 2545 Erie St. in Youngstown, will host its second Men’s & Women’s Alumni Basketball Game in honor of Alumnus Dave Petty - Class of 1984. Petty was a beloved alum, coach and teacher at CMHS before his untimely passing in 2010. To honor Petty’s legacy, CMHS will host a co-ed basketball game to benefit its Adopt-A-Student Scholarship Fund. Last year’s inaugural game raised more than $3,000 for tuition assistance for deserving, at-need students. Registration to play in the game is required and donations are welcome. American Sign Language club January class announced
Join the Poland library on Jan. 17 at 6 p.m. to learn American Sign Language (ASL). The purpose of the ASL club is to teach attendees of any age about American Sign Language. During the meetings, you will practice and learn the various aspects of the language and culture of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing. The goal is to bring awareness of and instill the love of ASL. Everyone is welcome, regardless of experience and refreshments will be provided.
Listen and Lego
Listen to a story and then have fun building with Legos at the Poland library on Jan. 4 at 1 p.m. Legos will be provided and this program is for ages 4-7.

ASL is focus of Baby Brilliant event
Learn how to use American Sign Language (ASL) with your child through rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Poland library on Dec. 27 at 10 a.m. Learn easy corresponding signs to learn and share with your little ones.
Tales and talk for 2s and 3s
Join the Poland library every Thursday in December at 10:30 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.
Trim a tree for December
Decorate an ornament for the Poland library’s all-seasons tree during library hours throughout December. This event is for children of all ages.
Local team has fundraiser
The Canfield Girls Basketball Boosters will host Designer Bag Bingo at St. Michaels Parish Family Life Center on Jan. 20, 2018. Thirteen games of bingo will be played, with an authentic designer handbag, including Kate Spade, Michael Kors, Coach, Tory Birch, Versace, Roberto Cavalli and Phillip Lim, awarded as the prize for each game. The handbag for the grand finale game will include the highest valued handbag filled with gift cards. Other raffles will be offered. Tickets are $40 pre-sale and $45 at the door and include 12 rounds of bingo, grand finale bingo, hors d’oeuvres and one drink ticket. Additional bingo cards and daubers will be available to purchase. A cash bar of beer and wine will also be offered. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with bingo beginning at 6 p.m. All funds raised will benefit the Lady Cards Basketball program. Yoga Class offered at the library
Friends of PLYMC is sponsoring a Yoga Class every Wednesday at the Poland library in the meeting room. Classes are from 5-6 p.m., and you pay as you attend. It is $10 per session and for more information, call 330-740-6086.

During the month of December, visit the Poland library to see all the places and mischief the elf, Dewey, is getting into. Look for Dewey on the bookshelf photos on the library’s Facebook page and Instagram and add some of your own.

Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
