The Canfield Village Middle School Student Council sponsored a food drive to benefit Second Harvest Food Bank Nov. 8-30. Non-perishable food items were collected in homerooms and the homeroom in each grade level which collected the most items was awarded a pizza party.
To encourage students to bring in some of the most needed items, each grade level received double points for a specified item.
Fifth-graders received double points for bringing in peanut butter, sixth-grade students received double points for bringing in canned tuna or chicken, seventh-grade students received double points for bringing in macaroni and cheese and eighth-graders received double points for bringing in canned soup.
“We really have a lot of food this year. We had a lot last year, but I think we have even more this year. Our collection boxes were overflowing. We have so many enthusiastic fifth-graders who love helping our school, so they really came through and brought a lot of food. And our competition between homerooms motivated students, too. We like helping Second Harvest because a lot of people get food from there and depend on them, so we like to help them out,” said Riley Miller, CVMS eighth-grade student council member.
Last year, the school collected 2,733 pounds of food for Second Harvest Food Bank.
