Show your library card for Phantoms ticket discount

If you show your PLYMC library card at the Covelli Centre box office on Jan. 15, you can purchase at a ticket for that day’s 1:35 p.m. game at special price of $9. At that game, there will be activities and special promotions. Your library card can save you money through the “Show Me Your Card” offers; go to LibraryVisit.org to learn more.

Play Bookopoly at the library

Teens and adults, play Bookopoly for fun and prizes. Pick up your game board and instructions at any branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County and play Bookopoly from Jan. 1 through March 31. Work your way around the game board by completing tasks, such as checking out a book, visiting our Pop-up Library or getting out into the community. Completing color sets earns you an entry slip for a prize drawing for a $10 Amazon gift card. Complete the entire board to enter into a drawing to win a Kindle Fire. The contest ends March 31 and all prizes will be awarded on April 16.

Chapter Chat Book Club to be Jan. 31

January meeting for Page Turners book club announced

Mystery and Tea book club to meet Jan. 9

Join the Austintown library on Jan. 9 at 6 p.m. to sip tea and discuss your latest mystery novel find at the Mystery and Tea book club.

Swap scrapbook paper

Bring in your unwanted scrapbook paper, gently used scraps, cutouts or embellishments and swap them out for something that is new to you. Swapping will take place during Austintown library hours on Jan. 27 at your leisure. This program is for adults.

Movie night at the library

Bring your own snacks and drinks to enjoy during the movie at the Austintown library on Jan. 30 at 6 p.m. Movie will be a newly released DVD rated PG or G. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Stamp with Cindy

Learn to create your own handmade cards using stamps, punches and other fun tools at the Austintown library on Jan. 11 at 6:30 p.m. and Jan. 12 at 11 a.m. Sign up to create each month’s greeting card with matching envelope. New program at the library

Join the program, True Crime Series, Part 1: Jack the Ripper at the Austintown library on Jan. 22 at 6 p.m. This five-part series will cover a different unsolved true crime each month. Choose any book, documentary (etc.) based on the current month’s topic and join us for discussion. This program is for adults.

Junior League hosts New York trip

The Junior League of Youngstown is hosting a round trip from Youngstown to New York City April 13-15. Spend the day as you wish for your selection of Broadway plays, shopping, sightseeing and dining. The “NYE Ball Drop” price is $139 per person if paid in full by Dec. 31 and $149 per person without a discount. Payment plans are accepted and must be paid in full by March 14 and will be $149 per person. Tickets are available until March 14 for the trip. Your ticket is transferable in the event you are unable to attend. No cash refunds will be issued. All minors must be accompanied by an adult. Since its founding in 1901 by social activist Mary Harriman, The Junior League has evolved into one of the oldest, largest and most effective women’s volunteer organizations in the world, encompassing more than 150,000 women in the 291 Leagues in four countries. Meals on Wheels of Mahoning County joins Sharing the Love campaign

Meals on Wheels of Mahoning County recently announced that it will be participating in the tenth annual Subaru Share the Love Event as a member of Meals on Wheels America – one of four national Share the Love charitable partners supported through the promotion. From Nov. 16 until Jan. 2, Subaru of America will donate $250 for every new Subaru vehicle sold or leased to the customer’s choice of participating charity. Participating Meals on Wheels America members, like Meals on Wheels of Mahoning County, will receive a share of the donation raised by Subaru in their state. Meals on Wheels has partnered with Boardman Subaru in Boardman to raise awareness for the popular year-end sales and giving event, and drive support for Meals on Wheels by participating in Mill Creek Park’s ‘Winter Celebration- Toyland’ at the annual holiday tree walk at the Davis Center. Strategy board games at the library

Holiday library closings announced for the end of the year

All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed on Dec. 30, 31 and Jan. 1, for the New Year holiday, and on Jan. 15 for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Learn to download your digital pictures from your phone or camera onto your computer at the Austintown library on Jan. 5. Then learn to send them in emails and upload them onto social media sites. Bring devices, attachment cords and laptop if available.

Meet the Phantoms

Players with the Youngstown Phantoms hockey team will be special story time presenters at the Austintown library on Jan. 9. A Phantoms game ticket will be given to each child that attends and there will be a craft and refreshments.

Blood Drive at the library

The Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross Proudly serves the needs of St. Elizabeth Hospital. The Mahoning Chapter will be taking blood donations to help the community at the Austintown library on Dec. 28 from 1-6 p.m. For appointments, call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Valley STEM + ME2 accepting applications for 2018-2019 school year

Enrollment is open for upcoming ninth and 10th grade students interested in applying to the Valley STEM + ME2 Academy for the 2018-2019 school year. The 7,500 square foot lab is housed on the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center Campus. The Academy uses a rigorous curriculum, utilizing problem-based learning based on STEM principles. The Valley STEM + ME2 Academy’s mission is to prepare students with skills necessary to compete in the global economy while nurturing the characteristics of discovery, invention, application and entrepreneurship. This Academy provides the ideal setting for students to receive problem-based education based on mastery of skills. The Academy has a STEM-designation from the Ohio Department of Education. This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Austintown library every Tuesday in December at 10 a.m.

Tales and talk for 2s and 3s

Join the Austintown library every Wednesday in December at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader. Dec. 20 will be a holiday program.

Make a craft at the Austintown library during regular hours throughout the month of December and take it home. This event is for children of all ages.

Guess the picture book from the cut up cover at the Austintown library during December. One winner chosen at random from correct entries. This event is for children of all ages.

Paper crafting corner

Join the Austintown library every month to learn how to create a different paper craft. The next event will take place on Dec. 29 at 11 a.m. You must register for this event, which is for adults.

Local team has fundraiser

The Canfield Girls Basketball Boosters will host Designer Bag Bingo at St. Michaels Parish Family Life Center on Jan. 20, 2018. Thirteen games of bingo will be played, with an authentic designer handbag, including Kate Spade, Michael Kors, Coach, Tory Birch, Versace, Roberto Cavalli and Phillip Lim, awarded as the prize for each game. The handbag for the grand finale game will include the highest valued handbag filled with gift cards. Other raffles will be offered. Tickets are $40 pre-sale and $45 at the door and include 12 rounds of bingo, grand finale bingo, hors d’oeuvres and one drink ticket. Additional bingo cards and daubers will be available to purchase. A cash bar of beer and wine will also be offered. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with bingo beginning at 6 p.m. All funds raised will benefit the Lady Cards Basketball program. Gotta Move Story Time at the library

Every Thursday at 10 a.m., join the Austintown library for a story time for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a care giver. Join in for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children: get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.
