Tickets on sale for Canfield-Poland game

CANFIELD

Student, adult and reserved seat tickets for Friday’s boys basketball contest between Canfield and Poland have gone on sale at Canfield’s athletic office.

Student tickets are $4, adult tickets go for $6 and reserved seats are $8. The athletic office is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. everyday.

Scott Frost named AP Coach of the Year

Scott Frost is The Associated Press coach of the year after leading Central Florida to an unbeaten season and a spot in the Peach Bowl.

Frost has already accepted the Nebraska head coaching job, but plans to complete the season with UCF and coach the 10th-ranked Knights against No. 7 Auburn.

Frost received 21 first-place votes and 100 points from 57 Top 25 poll voters who submitted ballots. Kirby Smart of Georgia finished second with seven first-place votes and 55 points. Clemson’s Dabo Swinney finished third with seven votes and 38 points.

Oklahoma’s Lincoln Riley (four, 36) was fourth and Miami’s Mark Richt (five, 28) was fifth. UAB’s Bill Clark (six), Wisconsin’s Paul Chryst (three), Iowa State’s Matt Campbell (two), Fresno State’s Jeff Tedford (one) and Auburn’s Gus Malzahn (one) also received first-place votes.

Panthers’ LB Davis suspended two games

CHARLOTTE, N.C.

Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis has been suspended for two games by the NFL following his helmet-to-helmet hit on Green Bay Packers wide receiver Davante Adams.

The league announced the decision Monday.

Adams left Sunday’s 31-24 loss to Carolina in the third quarter with a concussion after being blindsided by Davis following a Carolina interception. Davis was penalized 15 yards, but not ejected.

Davis, the 2015 NFL Walter Payton Man of the Year, was visibly upset on the sideline after the play.

Adams, who has suffered two concussions this season, took to social media on Monday to criticize Davis, saying there is no room in the game for hits like that.

EPL player assaulted at training facility

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND

Police are investigating the alleged assault of Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling at the club’s training ground.

The Daily Telegraph reported Sunday that Sterling was kicked and racially abused as he arrived at City’s Etihad Campus on Saturday, hours before scoring twice in a 4-1 victory over Tottenham in the Premier League.

In response to an inquiry about the alleged incident involving Sterling, Greater Manchester Police said Monday in a statement it has been “made aware that a 23-year-old man had been subject to a racially aggravated assault.”

The police force said no official report has been made but that officers were treating the incident as a hate crime.

Utah studies bid for 2030 Winter Olympics

SALT LAKE CITY

Utah officials studying the possibility of Salt Lake City making a bid to host another Winter Olympics said Monday they would rather host the games in 2030, but could be ready if they’re needed for 2026.

Hosting the games after the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles would provide a better opportunity to raise sponsorship dollars, said Fraser Bullock, co-chairman of the committee and a key player in the city’s 2002 Olympics. Los Angeles has exclusive rights to negotiate first with potential sponsors to help fund their games, meaning hosting the games before them would be more complicated than after, Bullock said.

“But if nobody else bids for 2026, we would certainly be available,” Bullock said.

Denver and Reno, Nevada have also expressed interest in the U.S. Internationally, cities considering making a bid include Sion, Switzerland; Calgary, Canada; and Sapporo, Japan.
