Report: YSU defensive coordinator Carl Pelini to BGSU

The Youngstown State football team may be in the market for a defensive coordinator.

The Toledo Blade is reporting that Carl Pelini, who has directed the Penguins' defense for the last three years under his brother Bo, has been offered the same job at Bowling Green and will soon be introduced as the Falcons' defensive coordinator.

BGSU was among the worst defensive teams in the country last season, allowing a Mid-American Conference-worst 506.6 yards per game, including 253.3 rushing yards.

Just four of the 128 other Football Bowl Subdivision schools gave up more yards on the average.

Carl Pelini's defense played a major role in 2016 as YSU advanced to the FCS title game and finished 12-4after a 28-14 loss to James Madison in the title game.

In 2017, YSU led Football Championship Subdivision teams in pass defense, allowing just 143.7 yards per game.

The Penguins also tied for 20th in total defense (316.9 yards) and were 20th in points allowed (19.1).

YSU finished 6-5.

Penguins offensive coordinator Shane Montgomery reportedly was among the candidates for the Robert Morris head coaching job in recent weeks, but the Colonials announced the hiring of former NFL linebacker Bernard Clark on Monday.
