POLICE CALLS

A summary of recent criminal activity in Girard, Liberty Hubbard, Austintown and Canfield:

GIRARD

Dec. 9

Drugs: A traffic stop on U.S. Route 422 resulted in a minor-misdemeanor citation charging Patrick R. Jiles, 32, of West Prospect Street, Girard, with drug abuse. Jiles admitted having a bag of about 5.9 grams of suspected marijuana; also found was a digital scale with suspected marijuana on it, a report showed.

Theft: A temporary tag was removed from a vehicle in the 200 block of East Second Street.

Dec. 10

Burglary: Someone apparently pushed in a cover to a window before entering a home in the 300 block of South Davis Street and taking a $500 flat-screen TV.

Recovered property: An officer reported finding parts to a laptop computer in the 300 block of Ohio Avenue.

Unauthorized use of a vehicle: A South Market Street man alleged his girlfriend took his 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt and failed to return it.

Dec. 11

Theft by deception: A Squaw Creek Drive woman reported two callers, one pretending to be her grandson and the other a police officer, instructed her to send $5,100, supposedly after the grandson had been pulled over and arrested and needed money to pay his bond. The woman learned, however, that the family member was OK, and she lost no money.

Theft: A woman discovered a safe that contained $12,000 was missing from her Washington Avenue apartment.

Domestic violence: A 14-year-old Girard boy was charged with the crime after his mother alleged the teen slammed his younger brother to the floor during an argument between the siblings related to an Xbox game.

Dec. 12

Arrest: Officers took Thomas M. Connelly, 43, into custody at his Morris Avenue home. The Girard man was wanted on a Girard Municipal Court warrant.

Theft: A man reported a United Parcel Service package stolen that was to have been delivered to his Church Hill Road residence.

Dec. 13

Theft: A Church Hill Road woman noticed a package that was to have been delivered to her apartment was missing.

Forgery: A Park Avenue man alleged an acquaintance had forged his signature on a document to sell a car that was in both of their names.

LIBERTY

Dec. 9

Robbery: James E. Blackmon Jr., 60, faced a robbery charge after a security guard for Giant Eagle, 4700 Belmont Ave., alleged the Cleveland man had pushed him out of the way, then ran into and knocked over two display stands after having tried to steal several cartons of cigarettes.

Theft: Someone smashed a car window before removing a purse from the vehicle in the 800 block of Ravine Drive.

Theft/criminal damaging: Someone in the 1000 block of Ravine Drive broke a vehicle’s window and took a purse.

Auto theft: A 1995 Oldsmobile Cutlass Cierra was stolen in the 1000 block of Academy Drive.

Dec. 10

Arrest: Teresa A. Minton, 46, of Church Hill-Hubbard Road, Girard, was taken into custody during a traffic stop on Logan Way after officers learned that she was wanted on a probation-violation warrant.

Theft/criminal damaging: Two vehicles in the 1300 block of Virginia Trail were found with broken windows. Property stolen included a $15 gift card and a gym bag.

Dec. 11

Arrest: Officers responded to a report of a man lying face-down on the ground near a Belmont Avenue restaurant, where they charged Billy R. Morrow Jr., 27, of North River Road, Warren, with disorderly conduct. Morrow was intoxicated in public and argumentative with officers, they said.

Arrest: Police were dispatched to the Mahoning County jail to pick up Anthony L. Hobbs, 26, of Garfield Avenue, Youngstown, who was wanted on a township warrant accusing him of failing to appear in court on a theft charge.

Auto theft: A Youngstown man reported his vehicle stolen while he stayed at a Belmont Avenue motel.

Theft: The catalytic converter was removed from a truck that belongs to a business in the 1000 block of Trumbull Avenue.

Dec. 12

Arrest: Austintown police handed to township authorities James E. Cominsky, 46, of North Edgehill Avenue, Youngstown. He was wanted on a probation-violation charge.

Drug paraphernalia/forgery: Township authorities assisted Hermitage, Pa., police who had a 47-year-old Knoxville, Tenn., man in their custody after the man had reportedly stayed at a Belmont Avenue motel. Found in the room were syringes and razor blades commonly associated with drug use, as well as several phony identification cards, a report stated.

Theft: A Logan Way man discovered a chain saw and numerous other tools missing from his work van, which resulted in a $2,260 loss.

Arrest: While dealing with a possible vehicle theft at a Belmont Avenue motel, officers charged Roberto J. Espada of Ayers Street, Youngstown, with assault, vandalism and theft after a woman alleged Espada, 23, had smacked, punched and choked her during an argument. Espada also punched and broke a window to the room, then left in the victim’s 2011 Hyundai Sonata, a report stated.

Domestic violence: Reginald D. White, 47, of Anoka Lane, Youngstown, faced charges of domestic violence, resisting arrest and obstructing official business after police had responded to a report of a man waving a firearm near a Gypsy Lane apartment building. Authorities had to use a stun gun because White struggled with them and refused several times to obey their commands; beforehand, a woman alleged he had struck and bit her face, a report showed.

Dec. 13

Arrest: While answering a possible shoplifting call at Walmart, 200 Goldie Road, officers took Willie L. Oliver, 48, into custody upon discovering Oliver, of Alameda Avenue, Youngstown, was wanted on a Boardman warrant. He was not charged in the shoplifting incident, however.

Drugs: A traffic stop in the 3100 block of Belmont Avenue resulted in the arrest of Wayne M. Schofield, 26, on charges of drug abuse and possessing drug paraphernalia when, police alleged, a small bag of suspected marijuana and a device often used to grind marijuana were found. Schofield, of Kelly Street, Mineral Ridge, also was cited on a charge of having an open container of whiskey in a motor vehicle.

Arrest: While answering a disturbance call at a Hadley Avenue apartment, authorities charged Justin D. Stamp, 35, of Hadley, Liberty, with disorderly conduct after saying Stamp had twice called 911 for a nonemergency situation that was instead a civil matter.

HUBBARD

Dec. 8

Arrest: After pulling them over in the 6300 block of Youngstown-Hubbard Road, authorities charged Nichole B. Duddy, 27, of East Boston Avenue, Youngstown, with obstructing official business, as well as Candace E. Hurd, 47, of Hager Street, Hubbard, with driving under suspension. Duddy provided a false name and Social Security number, police said.

Theft: A Rebecca Avenue woman told police she saw two teenage boys steal three bicycles from her yard.

Dec. 10

Trespassing: Officers issued a criminal-trespassing warning to a Youngstown woman, 50, after having responded to a possible shoplifting situation at Dollar General, 886 W. Liberty St.

Dec. 11

Aggravated menacing: Tommy P. Nirchi, 67, of West Park Avenue, Hubbard, faced an aggravated-menacing charge after an officer alleged having heard Nirchi threaten to use a knife to stab a neighbor with whom he’s having ongoing problems.

CANFIELD

Dec. 7

Arrest: Police on Youngstown-Salem Road arrested Michael Morales, 31, of West Middletown Road, Salem. He was charged with obstructing official business.

Dec. 8

Summons: Officers on West Main Street handed a summons to William Hogan, 32, of Hunter Avenue, Youngstown, charging him with driving under suspension.

Dec. 9

Citations: Daniel Perrico, 35, of Cranbrook Drive, Youngstown, was cited on charges of drug abuse (marijuana) and possessing drug paraphernalia after having been pulled over on North Broad Street.

Drugs: A traffic stop on Boardman-Canfield Road resulted in the arrest of Anttonio Dent, 19, of Crandall Avenue, Youngstown, who faced three felony drug-abuse counts (crack cocaine, heroin and Tramadol), as well as a misdemeanor charge of possessing drug paraphernalia. Also taken into custody was Latesha Hines, 28, of Oak Street, Youngstown, who was wanted on a telecommunications-harassment warrant from Boardman.

AUSTINTOWN

Dec. 8

Burglary: To an apartment in the 1000 block of Compass West Drive, from which furniture was reportedly removed.

Theft: An undisclosed sum of money was reportedly stolen from Walmart, 6001 Mahoning Ave.

Dec. 9

Recovered property: A purse was found in the 1200 block of Ohltown Road.

Unauthorized use of a vehicle: A car that had been taken without permission in the 400 block of South Raccoon Road was in a crash in Weathersfield Township.

Dec. 10

Criminal damaging: Someone with a pellet gun shot and broke a window to a building in the 1000 block of North Meridian Road.

Dec. 11

Theft: A metal ashtray was reported stolen from a home in the 100 block of North Beverly Avenue.

Arrest: Police picked up Joseph R. Davis, 21, at his Cannon Road residence. The Austintown man was wanted on two Struthers Municipal Court warrants.

Theft: Four suitcases were taken from a vehicle at an Interstate Boulevard motel.

Theft: Someone in the 2900 block of Whispering Pines Court removed a Christmas tree from a driveway.

Dec. 12

Arrest: James E. Cominsky of Westminster Avenue, Austintown, was taken into custody after authorities learned Cominsky, 46, was wanted on a Girard Municipal Court warrant accusing him of failing to comply with a court order.

Recovered property: A toy gun was reportedly found in the 70 block of Evans Avenue.

Possible drug overdose: A woman reportedly suffered a drug overdose at an apartment in the 4800 block of Westchester Drive. Four syringes, a spoon with burn marks and a suspected crack-cocaine pipe were among items found, a report showed.

Theft: Someone stole a hat and a pair of gloves from Walmart.

Theft: A data-collecting machine was stolen from Comprehensive Logistics LLC, 365 Victoria Road.
