COLUMBUS

The Ohio Department of Aging is seeking nominations for the Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame. Recognition honors lifetimes of excellence, ingenuity and compassion of residents 60 and older who have made and make a lasting impact on their professions, vocations or communities.

Nominees must be native-born Ohioans or residents for at least 10 years. Posthumous nominations are accepted.

For information or the nomination form, visit www.aging.ohio.gov/halloffame. Induction is conducted during national Older Americans Month. Nominations are accepted year-round, but must be received by Jan. 31 to be considered for induction in 2018.

Glasses for students

YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown school students are receiving brand-new glasses, thanks to a partnership between United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley and several organizations, including Essilor Vision Foundation, Classic Optical, Ageless Eyecare, Youngstown schools, Youngstown Community School, Youngstown Health Department, Youngstown Lions Club, Dentaquest, Sight for All, Modern Optical International and Mercy Health Foundation.

This fall, thanks to this partnership, volunteers screened more than 2,000 students in kindergarten through fifth grade and seventh grade. Students in K-4 who need additional eye exams will see a doctor from Ageless Eyecare at their schools this week and select frames.

St. Patrick Church, 367 N. Main St., announced its Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services schedule. Christmas Eve Advent Mass is at 8:30 a.m.; the Vigil Mass is at 4 p.m. and midnight. Christmas Day Mass will take place at 10 a.m.

Asleep at the wheel

YOUNGSTOWN

August Hlebovy, 35, is in Mahoning County jail, charged with possession of heroin after officers found him asleep behind the wheel in the middle of East Midlothian Boulevard at Sheridan Road on Friday afternoon.

A police report says officers put his car in park and tried to awaken him, but couldn’t, so they called paramedics, who were able to wake him. Officers took two pieces of folded papers containing what appeared to be heroin residue, the report says.
