BOARDMAN
U.S. Marshals this week arrested a man wanted by township police on 17 criminal charges, all related to suspected fraudulent checks.
According to police and court records, Ronald Scurti, 51, who police identify as being homeless, is charged with one count of fleeing/eluding, eight counts of passing bad checks and eight counts of criminal simulation in connection with incidents on Nov. 13, 14, and 15.
He also faces a charge out of Canfield of failure to comply with the order or signal of police and driving under suspension or violation of license restriction, according to court records.
According to a police report on a Nov. 14 incident at Walmart on Doral Drive, Scurti used “altered” checks to make three fraudulent purchases and conduct a cash-back exchange.
Store security reported that Scurti “had printed out and taped random numbers to the bottom of the checks he used to alter the routing numbers.”
According a police report filed Nov. 15, police were again dispatched to Walmart “for a male inside passing bad checks.”
A store employee reported that Scurti had attempted to use a bad check in the store Nov. 13, then used bad checks Nov. 15 for multiple purchases.
When police attempted to stop Scurti in the parking lot, they said he led them on a car chase, which police ended without catching him.
He was arrested Tuesday in Austintown and appeared in Mahoning County Area Court on Thursday for arraignment. He is scheduled to be back in court Tuesday.
