Laura Kollat, Assistant Director of Teaching and Learning at the Mahoning County Educational Service Center (MCESC), has been named Advocate of the Year for the Ohio School Counselor Association.
While Kollat is not a school counselor, she was nominated by a local school district for all she does as a School Counselor Liaison at MCESC, a role that includes working with dozens of counselors. In the nomination letter, counselors highlighted how Kollat has taken initiative to learn and provide resources to support those in the profession that goes above and beyond to provide professional development.
“Laura’s heart has always been about doing what is best for children. By providing guidance and support for school counselors, she continues to have a positive impact on children,” said Kim Davis, Director of Teaching and Learning, MCESC. “She is much deserving of this award.”
Kollat’s background is in elementary education, and spent most of her career as a first-grade teacher. She has been with the Mahoning County Educational Service Center for six years and has had several positions including Instructional Consultant, Lead of the Resident Educator Team and was recently named the Assistant Director of Teaching and Learning at MCESC.
Jean Senchak from Austintown Intermediate School was also honored for her service as a school counselor by the Ohio School Counselor Association and received the LifeTime Achievement Award
Heidi Martin and Jarod Thomas accepted an OSCAR for Austintown Middle School. The Ohio School Counselor Accountability Report is a tool to help community and school members understand the counseling program and services provided to students and families.
