The Canfield High School Choral Music Department had its annual winter concert on Dec. 7.
Under the direction of Choir Director Kelly Scurich, the concert choir, One Octave Higher choir and Canfield chamber ensemble performed holiday songs for family and friends. The Canfield Village Middle School Canfield Cambiata, under the direction of Canfield Village Middle School choir director Tom Scurich, also performed at the concert.
The concert choir began the concert with “Il Est Ne! Noel” arranged by Steve Kupferschmid, “Wintertime Aglow” by Audrey Snyder and finished their portion of the concert with “Yuletide Rhythm” by Greg Gilpin.
The Canfield Cambiata, comprised of select seventh- and eighth-grade students, took the stage to perform “Carol of the Bells” arranged by Ricardo Spina and “Do You Hear What I Hear” arranged by Audrey Snyder. Canfield Cambiata member Hanna Brose performed a solo during the selection.
The Canfield Cambiata closed their portion of the show with “Blue Christmas” arranged by Mac Huff. Derek Davidson performed a solo during the selection.
The One Octave Higher choir then took the stage to perform “The Kalanta of the New Year!” by Malcolm Dalglish and then moved into “Hush!” arranged by Sally Albrecht. The choir continued with “Jonathan’s Bell Carol” by Andy Beck, which featured Jonathan Scurich as a soloist.
The One Octave Higher choir finished their portion of the concert with a lively rendition of “Nuttin for Christmas” arranged by Anita Kerr.
The Canfield chamber ensemble began their performance with “Deck the Halls” arranged by James McKelvy and followed that song with “Hava Nageela” by Maurice Goldman. The choir ended their portion of the concert with a jazzy rendition of “Santa’s Rockin’ Round the Clock Tonight!” arranged by Kirby Shaw, which included theatrics and dance moves.
The close the winter concert, all choirs joined together again on stage to sing “Rejoice!” by Douglas Wagner. The mass choir then sang “Silent Night” by Paul Sjolund with soloist Allison Leone. In keeping with tradition, alumni who had studied under Scurich who were in attendance were invited to join the choirs on stage.
Choreographer for the concert was Scurich, and Ronnie Sue Gregory, Courtney Larson and Tim Elder served as accompanists. Cara DeChurch and Jonathan Scurich served as student conductors and student accompanists included, Carmel Cerimele, Andrew Crans, Jordan Helmick, Grace Li, Emma Kadilak, Jessica Lee, Jonathan Scurich and Abigail Stilson.
Instrumentalists included Alex Sanders, Brianna Remias, Justin Tura, Alex Davison and Samantha Hudock.
“Thank you for coming to our winter concert. Happy holidays,” Scurich said to end the evening.
