Junior League hosts New York trip
The Junior League of Youngstown is hosting a round trip from Youngstown to New York City April 13-15. Spend the day as you wish for your selection of Broadway plays, shopping, sightseeing and dining. The “NYE Ball Drop” price is $139 per person if paid in full by Dec. 31 and $149 per person without a discount. Payment plans are accepted and must be paid in full by March 14 and will be $149 per person. Tickets are available until March 14 for the trip. Your ticket is transferable in the event you are unable to attend. No cash refunds will be issued. All minors must be accompanied by an adult. Since its founding in 1901 by social activist Mary Harriman, The Junior League has evolved into one of the oldest, largest and most effective women’s volunteer organizations in the world, encompassing more than 150,000 women in the 291 Leagues in four countries. Old Fashioned Makerspace - dolls and puppets at the library
In a time before today’s technology, children had to come up with their own toys. Bring your imagination to the Canfield library on Jan. 13 at 2:30 p.m. and learn how to make several, including corn husk, clothespin, finger and paper puppets/dolls. All materials provided, including paint and glue. This program is for ages 4-13.
Meals on Wheels of Mahoning County joins Sharing the Love campaign
Meals on Wheels of Mahoning County recently announced that it will be participating in the tenth annual Subaru Share the Love Event as a member of Meals on Wheels America – one of four national Share the Love charitable partners supported through the promotion. From Nov. 16 until Jan. 2, Subaru of America will donate $250 for every new Subaru vehicle sold or leased to the customer’s choice of participating charity. Participating Meals on Wheels America members, like Meals on Wheels of Mahoning County, will receive a share of the donation raised by Subaru in their state. Meals on Wheels has partnered with Boardman Subaru in Boardman to raise awareness for the popular year-end sales and giving event, and drive support for Meals on Wheels by participating in Mill Creek Park’s ‘Winter Celebration- Toyland’ at the annual holiday tree walk at the Davis Center. Tales to Tails January program announced
Read to your favorite therapy dogs at the Canfield library on Jan. 8 at 6 p.m. This program for school-aged children helps develop reading skills, promotes confidence and encourages a love of reading. Bring a book of your choice or the librarians will find one for you. Therapy dogs provided by Pawz for People, a Community Partner of Pet Partners, a local Pet Therapy group.
Stephen King Constant Readers Club announces January meeting
Join the Canfield library in discussing Stephen King’s riveting stories, as well as other captivating tales by his peers on Jan. 9 at 6:30 p.m. In January, the club will continue its journey to the Dark Tower with book two of the series, “The Dark Tower II: The Drawing of the Three” by Stephen King, followed by a preview of new and exciting upcoming titles. This program is for adults.
Newcomers of Mahoning Valley will meet on Dec. 18
The Newcomers of Mahoning Valley will meet on Dec. 18 at Johnny’s Fine Food and Spirits, located at 7807 Market St. in Boardman. The meeting will begin at noon. Hostesses are Bonnie Lambert and Alice Marchione. Instead of a speaker, members will play a Christmas gift exchange game. There will be an update of all sub groups, including the new travelers group. Movie night at the library
Join the Canfield library for a Thursday Night Movie on Jan. 4 to watch a newly released DVD. Feel free to bring your own small snacks and drinks. Children under the age of 7 must be accompanied by an adult. Movie will be either PG or PG 13. Movie night is for adults and teens.
Holiday library closings announced for the end of the year
All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed on Dec. 30, 31 and Jan. 1, for the New Year holiday, and on Jan. 15 for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Canfield United Methodist Church announces Holiday Worship times
There will be Christmas Eve worships at Canfield United Methodist Church at 1:30 p.m., 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. The Joyful Praise Children’s choir will be singing during the 1:30 p.m. worship, and the Chancel Choir will be singing during 9 p.m. worship. Each worship will feature music, lessons, the Christmas message communion and candle lighting.
Canfield basketball battles hunger
The Canfield basketball teams are battling Poland on the court and hunger off the court. The annual Canfield versus Poland basketball games are at Canfield the weekend of Dec. 22, and Jill Baker, Canfield varsity player, is organizing a food drive. Spectators are encouraged to bring a non-perishable canned good or monetary donation for Second Harvest Food Bank. Anyone who brings in an item or donation will be entered in a drawing for a prize.

iM Image Marketing, a graphic and web design company based in Canfield, has recently hired Abigail Wakefield as a PR Specialist. Prior to this position, Wakefield had been working as a freelance PR and marketing consultant.
Blood Drive at the library
The Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross proudly serves the needs of St. Elizabeth Hospital. The Mahoning Chapter will be taking blood donations to help the community at the Canfield library on Dec. 28 from 2-7 p.m. For appointments, call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Local church offers chicken dinners
Drive through chicken dinners will be offered at Lord of Life Church, located at 550 N. Broad Street in Canfield, on Dec. 28 from 3-6 p.m. They will consist of chicken parmesan, spaghetti, three bean salad, roll and butter, and cake. The cost is $9 per dinner (cash only) and the proceeds will help with ministry expenses. Each customer will get $1 off the purchase price if they bring a can of vegetables that will be donated to the needy via the Rescue Mission or some other worthwhile organization. Join Off the Shelves...Book Club
Welcome to this monthly book club for a lively discussion of titles chosen “Off the Shelves” of the Canfield library’s book club room. The club will meet on Dec. 21 at 11 a.m. and again on Dec. 26 at 6:30 p.m. Join the fun with these upcoming reads: December: “Britt-Marie was Here” by Fredrik Backman, January: “The Widow” by Fiona Barton and February: “The Magpie Murders” by Anthony Horowitz.
Lego my library
Meet and enjoy creating Lego designs on Dec. 20 at 6 p.m. at the Canfield library. Legos will be provided. This event is for children who are ages 6 and up.
Forever Young book club to meet in December
Do you love reading YA books? Join this club at the Canfield library on Dec. 19. at 6:30 p.m. where they will be reading and discussing a different young adult book every month. This month, they will be discussing “Tell Me Three Things” by Julie Buxbaum. This program is for adults.
Mah-Jongg Mondays at the library
Drop in to play Mah-Jongg with others who love the game. Bring your own Mah-Jongg set or share with a friend every Monday at the Canfield library from 1-3 p.m. Mah-Jongg sets not provided for this program for adults. The final December meeting will be on Tuesday Dec. 26 from 1-3 p.m.
Bonding with babies and books
This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Canfield library every Thursday in December at 10 a.m.
Tales and talk for 2s and 3s
Join the Canfield library every Tuesday in December at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader. Dec. 19 will be a holiday program.
Ugly sweater contest at the library
Join in the fun to vote for the Canfield library staff member wearing the ugliest holiday sweater from Dec. 11-16. One vote per person per day, and your vote enters you into a drawing for a gift certificate prize to Dough House Cookies at the Canfield library. This is available during library hours.
Tween DIY gift wrap and bows
If you are tired of the same old boring wrapping paper or want those holiday gifts to be extra special, go to the Canfield library on Dec. 16 at 2:30 p.m. and make your own wrapping paper and bows to take home. Choose and create two different designs and coordinating bows to take home. A treat will be provided. This event is for tweens age 9-12.
Coloring for grown-ups
Join the Canfield library on Dec. 18 from 10-11:15 a.m. and tap into your creative side with the newest relaxation craze: coloring for grown-ups. Colored pencils and markers will be provided along with intricate abstract and themed design sheets. This program is for teens and adults only.
Canfield movie night - holiday edition
Ring in the holiday season by joining the Canfield library on Dec. 18 at 6 p.m. where they will be watching a holiday-themed movie. Feel free to bring your own small snacks and drinks. This event is for children of all ages. Children under the age of 7 must be accompanied by an adult. Movie will be either PG or PG 13. This is a holiday program.
Gotta Move Story Time at the library
Every Wednesday at 10 a.m. and again at 11:30 a.m., join the Canfield library for a story time for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a care giver. Join in for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children: get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.
Join a chair yoga class at the library
Chair Yoga is sponsored by the Friends of PLYMC. It is $10 a class, and you can pay as you attend. Class meets every Friday and dress comfortably. For more information, contact the Development Office at 330-740-6086.
Give a high five to the dogs
Come and read to the Canfield library’s favorite therapy dogs. Give them a “High Five” to welcome them to the library. Bring your own book, or the library will find one for you. The Mahoning Valley Corvettes joins in with Salem car cruise for event
The call to take over The Salem Super cruise, Salem’s largest annual event attracting thousands, was recently answered by The Mahoning Valley Corvettes. The non-profit car club dates back to 1962 including members from every surrounding community and Salem. Many of the club members have enjoyed the Salem Super Cruise and will now partner with the City of Salem to put on the event entering its 14th year. The Salem Super Cruise is open to all cars and trucks, not just Corvettes. Motorcycles are also welcome. The weekend benefits the Second Harvest Foodbank, which feeds many hungry local families. The event will take place June 7-10 and will feature activities, some free, including a parade, car show, food, live bands and more. The Mahoning Valley Corvettes look forward to partnering with the City of Salem to provide a this weekend for the entire family.

GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
