1916: President Woodrow Wilson vetoes an immigration measure aimed at preventing “undesirables” and anyone born in the “Asiatic Barred Zone” from entering the U.S. (Congress overrode Wilson’s veto in 1917.)

1972: Apollo 17 astronauts Harrison Schmitt and Eugene Cernan end their third and final moonwalk and blast off for their rendezvous with the command module.

2012: A triumphant North Korea stages a mass rally of soldiers and civilians to glorify the country’s young ruler, Kim Jong Un, two days after the successful launch of a satellite into orbit.

2012: A gunman with a semi-automatic rifle kills 20 first-graders and six educators at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., then commits suicide as police arrive. The 20-year-old had also fatally shot his mother at their home before carrying out the attack on the school.

A malevolent joker has been victimizing Mr. and Mrs. Basil Davis of Medford Avenue, Youngstown, with deliveries from florists, a phony obituary call to The Vindicator and false alarms to the fire department, so when an overheated furnace at the home started a fire, the Davises at first thought the responding fire trucks were another “joke.” Damage was estimated at $2,500.
