Lou Holtz sues The Daily Beast over article

ORLANDO, FLA.

Hall of Fame college football coach Lou Holtz is suing The Daily Beast over an article that claimed he called immigrants “deadbeats” at last year’s Republican National Convention in Cleveland.

The federal lawsuit filed Wednesday in Orlando, where Holtz lives, claims an article published by the news website on July 19, 2016, defamed Holtz, causing him to lose paid speaking opportunities and suffer personal humiliation. He’s seeking damages of more than $75,000.

The article originally carried the headline “Lou Holtz at RNC Said Immigrants are Deadbeats Invading the US.” The suit claims The Daily Beast took Holtz’s comments out of context and that he never used the term “deadbeats.” After complaints, the website updated its headline to “Holtz Goes on Immigrant-Bashing RNC Rant.”

A spokesperson for The Daily Beast’s parent company said it doesn’t comment on pending litigation.

Indy to host 2021 NBA All-Star Game

INDIANAPOLIS

The NBA has chosen Indianapolis to host the 2021 All-Star Game.

Commissioner Adam Silver made the announcement Wednesday just hours before Paul George returned to Bankers Life Fieldhouse for the first time since the Pacers traded him to Oklahoma City last summer.

The only other time Indiana has hosted All-Star weekend was in 1985 when the game was played at the RCA Dome.

Larry Bird hand-delivered the latest bid in New York City seven months ago. The Pacers plan to use their home arena as well as Lucas Oil Stadium, which is just a short walk away. Fan festivities will be held at the city’s nearby convention center.

USSF releases names of president candidates

CHICAGO

The U.S. Soccer Federation says it received the required three letters of nomination for eight candidates in its presidential election, one fewer than the total of people who announced their intention to run.

The USSF is conducting background checks on the candidates whose nominations were received by Tuesday night’s deadline. The governing body said the check is to ascertain that a candidate has “no conviction or no contest plea to a felony or crime of moral turpitude” and it will announce the candidate slate after completing the process.

Sunil Gulati, the USSF president since 2006, decided after the Americans failed to qualify for the World Cup that he will not seek a fourth four-year term.

The nine people who announced they are running include former men’s national team players Paul Caligiuri, Eric Wynalda and Kyle Martino; U.S. women’s goalkeeper Hope Solo; Soccer United Marketing president Kathy Carter; USSF vice president Carlos Cordeiro; Boston lawyer Steve Gans; New York lawyer Michael Winograd; and Paul LaPointe, Northeast Conference manager of the United Premier Soccer League.

The election will be held in February.
